HOKITIKA, February 21.

The following telegram was to-day received by the County Chairman from Hon. R. Semple: “Owing to the disaster near Wairoa, I regret that I* have had to cancel my visit to the West Coast.”

A recent winner of a £12,000 Australian Sweep, Mr J. S. Nalder, of Gisborne, was formerly stationed at Hokitika.

Mr and Mrs G. Heinz, Park Street, returned on Saturday after a motor tour of the South Island.

Mr G. Powley, Rangiora Post Office, is at present renewing old acquaintances here. Mr D. Heinz left on return to Nelson yesterday. r The Hokitika Harmonica Band staged a very successful concert last evening, at the Regent Theatre, to a packed house. Every item was encored. The promoters of the concert are to be congratulated on their efforts, this being their first appearance before the public. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs Richards and Benjamin, J’s.P., a young man was charged with being found drunk in charge of a car in Stafford St., this morning at three o’clock. He was remanded for a week on the application of Sergeant Gilligan, and granted bail in a personal surety of £5O. Mr Hugh Dalton, a Member of the House of Commons, who was undersecretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the British Labour Government, and Mr J. Stein, a member of the South African Parliament, arrived in Hokitika yesterday from Waiho Gorge, whence they had flown from Wellington on Friday last. Both gentlemen speak highly of the scenery of New Zealand, and in their short stav, they have seen most of the show places. Mr Dwyer of Internal Affairs Department, is conducting the party on their tour. They left today for Christchurch, and later visit the Hermitage. Last night Mr H. L. Michel, Deputy-Mayor, and Mr J. A. Murdoch, representing the County Chairman, waited on the visitors and conveyed good wishes to the travellers. Members of the local branch of the Labour Party also met the travellers and expressed good wishes. Mr Dalton as will be gathered, is experienced in world politics, and proved most interesting to meet, and discuss world personalities and current events. New Zealand appears to have made a strong impression on the visitors. , Lake Kanieri was a very popular resort yesterday, several hundred visitors enjoying to the full the beauties of the Lake. The banks of the lake were lined with bathers all day long, with Sunny Bight the most popular location. . . The Municipal Band had a picnic day for its members and friends and were located at the foot of the slip under the shadow of Mt. Tuhua, where a pleasant day was spent. The weather for the week-end was perfect, but very hot, and this caused the placid waters of the Lake to have an added attraction. Kokatahi defeated Arahura at tennis yesterday, by 11 sets 75 games to 5 sets 58 ‘games, in the C. Grade Competition. The Hokitika Amateur Swimming Club’s Carnival took place on Saturday afternoon, when there was a fair attendance of the public present.
