Daniel, of Dunedin, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs Southern, of Stillwater, returned by yesterday’s express. An Official Wireless message stated that Mr Lloyd George has arrived back in England from a holiday on the Riviera, during which he and Dame Margaret Lloyd George celebrated their golden wedding.

Dr. E. F. Thompson, a graduate of Auckland University College, has been appointed hydrologist to the Bermuda Biological Station. The appointment is regarded as important, and was made by the Royal Geographical Society for five years. Dr. Thompson was formerly assistantdirector of the Canterbury Museum.

The death occurred at Waiho Gorge early on Saturday morning of Mr Henry Travers Herbert, 57, of Hertfordshire, England. In company with his wife, deceased, who was a dentist by profession, had been on a tour of the world, and had been at Waiho for only a few days. He was a sufferer from Chronic cardias trouble, but his death was unexpected, occurring while he was in bed. He was booked to return to England next Monday. Dr. W. McKay, of Greymouth, was at Waiho at the time, and he was called, but death had ensued. The funeral took place at Wataroa.

The death occurred suddenly at Eltham, on Saturday, of Mrs George H. Mann, one of the best-known residents of the Eltham district. She retired on Friday night in apparently good health, but was taken suddenly ill and was removed to hospital, where she died in the early hours of the morning. Mrs Mann was prominently connected with all women’s organisations in Eltham—the Plunket Society, the Women’s Institute, the Red Cross Society, and the Anglican Church. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and one son.

Mr and Mrs W. S. Lowe were farewelled at the Church of Christ on Saturday evening. Occasion was also taken to welcome the new minister, Mr R. A. Blampied. After four years in Greymouth, Mr Lowe has accepted a call to Launceston, Tasmania. Mr A. Walton occupied the chair. Among the visitors were Archdeacon Jermyn, representing the Greymouth Ministers’ Association, and Messrs H. Cave and J. K. Robinson, preachers of the Church of Christ at Hokitika and Nelson respectively. Eulogistic reference to Mr Lowe’s fine work on behalf of the assembly was made by Messrs G. M. Truman and R. J. Carruthers, elders of the church; also to Mrs Lowe as a worthy helpmate. As a token of the church’s esteem, Mr Carruthers presented Mr Lowe With a cheque, expressing the earnest hope that in their new land, Mr and Mrs Lowe would be richly blessed. Little Miss Joy Taylor presented Mrs Lowe with a bouquet. Mr and Mrs Lowe will leave by the rail-car on Thursday evening.
