Mr. W. Nicholl, who leaves this morning on transfer to Christchurch was farewelled yesterday by fellow employees of the Goods Branch, Railways Department, Greymouth. Several speakers paid tributes to the many fine qualities of Mr. Nicholl, and wished him success in his new position. The presentation of a smokers’ outfit was made and Mr. Nicholl suitably replied.

The death occurred at the Christchurch Public Hospital on Thursday, after a short illness, of Mrs. Winifred Jack, of Lyttelton. Mrs. Jack was a daughter of the Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, formerly Reform member of Parliament for Selwyn, and later a member of the Legislative Council. He was known as the “silent member.” She was born at Greymouth and lived with her family at Rakaia until she took up nursing at Hawera. Mrs. Jack spent some years nursing in the North Island, and subsequently entered the service of the North Canterbury Hospital Board as sister in charge of the casualty ward at Lyttelton, a position which she held for about five years until her marriage 20 years ago to Mr. David Jack. Mr. Jack died just a year ago. There was no family.
