I Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 11. There were forty teachers present at the D.H. School yesterday to hear an address by Mr ,W. A; Servjce, Senior Schools Inspector, on possible changes in the curriculum consequent on the abolition of the proficiency examination. The school excursion to Runanga takes place next Wednesday. The funeral yesterday at Stafford of the late Miss Bridget Ahern was largely attended, and many floral tributes were, received. The services at the church and graveside were conducted by Rev. Father D. Healy, of. Kumara. At the Borough Council meeting, the tender of the Hokitika Guardian and Evening Star Co. for the print ing of the borough , roll was accepted as the lowest of two tenders. It was reported that 325 electors had been deleted from the electoral roll. 1 The Town Clerk and Cr. Parry were /requested to report on the purchase of an electric hoist for the abattoirs. It was stated one flrm had submitted a quote at £194 10s. A plan for a proposed drainage system for north Revell Street was submitted by Mi J. Macfarlane, and it was resolved that an easement be obtained from Mr J. Cameron for permission to put a drain through his section to connect with the Tancred Street drain Approval was given the Town Clerk to open a separate account in the Bank of New Zealand for the purpose of entering all monies derived from the sale of second-hand wooden water pipes, as required by' Section 20 of the Finance Act, 1934. Hon. R. Semple has wired the County Chairman,’ Mr W A. Jamieson, that he arrives here by plane on February 22, spending that and the next day inspecting public works in the county, and proceeding on February 24 to Greymouth and Westport. Claud Neon Lights, Christchurch, applied to erect a Claud Neon light under verandah , of premises occupied by Mr Nichol, Revell Street. The sign measures 8 ft. in length and 1 ft. in depth.—Approved, subject to sign being Bft. above footpath. (Westland) Committee N.Z. Centennial, advised that a list of tentative dates of early historical events, on the West Coast has been supplied, and the Under-Secret-ary asked each locality to select and send in its district. Recommendations should be furnished not later than the 12th inst. Also, forwarding a draft of suggestions for local celebrations. R. A. Campbell, consulting engineer, certified that subject to minor work still to be done that the new pumping house had been completed to his satisfaction, and that final payment may be made to the contractor. The Automobile Association (Westland Branch) asked that when the installation of the water 1 mains has been completed, that steps ' be taken to expedite the sealing of the Borough roads.—Received, and to inform the Association that £uch was 1 the Council’s intention. Regarding the purchase of a motor-lorry, it was decided to go into the matter of costs compared with the present system and the amount of work required. Discussion of tar-sealing proposals was deferred until the return of Cr. Heinz (Chairman of the Works Committee), who.is reporting on the matter, and in the meantime, it was decided to keep under observation the effect on the portion of Fitzherbert Street just completed. The Secretary of the Westland Racing Club asked that attention be given to the road and footpaths in Hampden St., prior to the races on 25th and 26th inst. —Approved.
