FIRST BRITISH TANK
NEW ZEALANDER WAS DRIVER. “The Record,” official organ of the British Transport Workers’ Union, reports the death of Laurence Martin, a member of the Commercial Road Transport Branch. He was employed as a driver by Hay’s Wharf Cartage Company, and was well known at their London depots. He was born in New Zealand, but came,to Great Britain when quite a youngster. He took part in the Great War, and as a sergeant-major in-
structor he drove the first British tank into action on the Western Front. j On his return to civilian life, he took lup motor driving as a livelihood and became an active member of the Union. He had been for years a shop steward and a member of the A r ea Trade Group Committee. He was also a member of lite South-Eastern Road j Transport Conciliation Board,
