The appointment of Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., as Principal Stipendiary Magistrate in Auckland, in succession to Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M.; has been advised by the Department of Justice. The appointment will come into effect next Wednesday, the, date of the expiry of Mr Wilson’s three months’ leave of absence. In addition to Mr McKean, the Auckland Bench includes Mr C. The death occurred at the Christchurch Hospital yesterday of Mr William Fitzgerald, of Christchurch, and formerly a well-known and esteemed resident of Ikpmatua, of which locality he was a native. He left there for Canterbury about ten

years ago. He was the youngest son of Ikamatua pioneeT residents, Mr and Mrs John Fitzgerald, and was 47 years of age. Deceased, who was unmarried, was a member of the staff of Kempthorne, Prosser and Co. and had been ailing only for about a week, having taken ill suddenly whilst returning home from work. He leaves four brothers, Thomas and John (Ikamatua), Michael (Weheka) and James (Waiuta), while there are two sisters, Mesdames D. Shannahan and F. Grogan (Greymouth). The sympathy of many friends will be extended to the relatives in their bereavement.
