BACKED FOR £5,000
AUCKLAND-OWNED HORSE BRACKETED WITH AJAX. The champion three-year-old, Ajax, is already a strong favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, to be run at Flemington on February 26. A Melbourne book-maker visiting Sydney for the Anniversary racing at Randwick laid £5,000 against Ajax and Elanage for the Newmarket and Australian Cup. Ajax is a stayer as well as a sprinter. He was second in the Sydney and V.R.C. Derbies (I- miles) in 1937, and won the Lloyd Stakes at Flemington last November, equalling the Australasian mile record of Peter Pan and Sarcherie, 1.35 L His autumn mission embraces the Futurity, and possibly the Newmarket, provided he is reasonably weighted. The Auckland-owned Elanage, rated as one of Victoria's best stayers, this summer, won the mile and ahalf Bagot Handicap at Flemington, an unusual performance for a three-year-old.
