ARUNDEL MURDER SEQUEL. TIMARU, February 10. Randall Reginald David Smith, who was sentenced to death, last week, for the murder of William Gaby, the Arundel storekeeper, who was killed on September 10, was charged in the Timaru Police Court, this morning, with obtaining money and goods of the total value of £8 16s 7d at Seacliffe, on September 13, by means of a valueless cheque. On the application of Detective-Sergeant E. M. Thomas, Smith was remanded to appear at Christchurch, on February 17. Mcelroy sentenced. DUNEDIN, February 10. In the Supreme Court, John Edward McElroy, who was acquitted yesterday on a manslaughter charge, was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, for assaulting Constate Butler. ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE. AUCKLAND, February 9. A series of charges of robbery with the violence of assault, so as to cause the actual bodily harm of assault; and of theft from the person, were heard against Alfred Norman O’Meara, a labourer, aged 41, by his Honour Mi’ Justice Fair, at the Supreme Court. A younger man Bernard Kilkolly, who was charged jointly with O’Meara with the same offences was found mentally unable to plead and was committed to the Auckland Mental Hospital. It was alleged that the accused attacked an .elderly visitor from .. the country, Philip Moore, in a public convenience on New Year’s Eve, and after 'seriously injuring him, robbed him of £2 10s in money and a gold watch and chain valued at £l5. Mr. V. R. Meredith outlined the Crown Case, and said that after the assault Moore was taken to hospital, covered with blood and suffering from concusion. For some time he was in a very serious condition, but eventualy he recovered. The jury convicted the accused on the charge of robbery with violence. The accused was remanded for sentence. MOTORIST SENT FOR TRIAL. AUCKLAND, February 10.The death of a cyclist, on January 1, from injuries suffered when he was knocked off his machine by a car on the New North Road on September 22, was the subject of an inquiry by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court, this morning. The driver of the car, John Reginald Herring, timber dealer, was charged with negligent driving, thereby causing the death of Josiah Flower Carter, 38. After hearing evidence, Mr. Hunt returned a formal verdict as to the cause of death, and committed Herring, who pleaded not guilty, to the Supreme Court, for trial.
