N.Z. OVERSEA TRADE
CONTINUED INCREASE. AGREEMENT WITH AUSTRALIA. ["Per Brass Association.! WELLINGTON, February 8. December, 1937, saw an excess of imports in the overseas trade of New Zealand, compared with an excess of exports in the corresponding months of the previous two years. Though the total exports, excluding specie, for the month moved up by £95,000, imports were £315,000 higher than in December of 1936, and the comparison with the December, 1935, figures, 'shows a change from an excess of exports of £708,000 then to an excess of imports now of £192,000. Figures for the 12 months of 1937 show a big expansion in the value of New Zealand’s export trade to £66,713,000; but an even larger expansion of imports; so that where, in 1936, the
excess of exports was £12,493,000, the 1937 figure was decreased to an export surplus l of only £10,552,000. The detailed figures are as follows: MONTH OF DECEMBER. Excess of Exports. Imports. SYDNEY, February 9. The “Herald’s” Canberra correspondent says it is likely that the trade agreement with New Zealand will operate only partially,, in its early stages. Points on which there has been disagreement will probably be held over for further negotiation.
