UNMARRIED CLERGY

FOR ANGLICAN CHURCH Favoured by Heads [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] . (Received December 14, 9 p.m.) LONDON, December 13. Voluntary celibacy on the part of the newly-ordained Anglican clergy, is urged in a memorial, which has been signed by Lord Halifax, Lord Sankey, Lord Hugh Cecil, Viscount Holmer, Mr. Athelstan Riley, and Mr. Edwyn Bevan. The rmemorial has been submitted to the Archbishops of Canterbury, York, Wales, and Canterbury. The Archbishops have replied: “We realise the importance of the proposal, and agree in thinking that the scheme might be of real value.” The memorial suggests that the attention of the theological students should be directed to the need of an unmarrjed clergy, and that they should undertake not to marry for five years after their ordination, after which they would be free to marry. The gradual evolution of an unmarried clergy would thus be facilitated.
