BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Mr Willie Ritchie of the staff of Sunnyside Mental Hospital, is spending his holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs H. S. Ritchie, Clifford Street. The many friends of Mr Evan Jones, Roa Road, who has been undergoing treatment in the Grey Hospital, for some considerable time, will be pleased to learn of a decided improvement in his condition. Mr Jock Anderson has gone to Wellington, .where he will enter hospital to undergo an operation to his eye. He will remain there for some weeks. A severe rain storm swept over the town during the week-end. It was very welcome as, not only did it replenish the water tanks, but it also laid the dust nuisance for the time being. Failing tar-sealing, this is me best we can hope for. Miss Jean Davidson has returned to Gore, after spending a holiday with her father in Blackball. Preparations for the forthcoming children’s Xmas tree which will be held in the Miners’ Hall on Xmas Eve, were advanced a stage further on Friday evening when Mesdames Park, Driscoll and Anderson, a deputation from the School Committee, met the Union executive with the assurance of the whole-hearted co-operation of the School Committee on the occasion. It was finally agreed that the three ladies, accompanied . by the Union secretary, would travel to town during next week for the purpose of interviewing Santa Claus. The Xmas tree will be for tne children in the township from the age of six months to 14 years, and the youngsters are in for a good time. Santa Claus has kindly agreed to be present in person, so the kiddies may come and meet him. Subscription lists have now been issued in connection with the forthcoming Blackball-Roa-Ngahere picnic and the secretary of the picnic committee, Mr A. MacGougan, in publishing the first list, wishes to sincerely thank all those who have donated to the fund. The picnic will probabiy take place at the latter end of January, or early in February, and the rendexvous will be fixed later. Appended is the first list: Mrs H. J. Campbell £1 Is, Mr H. their usual highly successful children’s plain and fancy dress ball, prior to tne break-up for the summer holidays, in the Miners’ Hall on Friday night. In spite of adverse weather conditions, there was a large attendance of school children and adults. Very many of the children appeared in fancy dress and much ingenuity was displayed in many of the make-ups, and the judges had.. no easy task set them in picking out the various winners in the fancy aress competition. General satisfaction. was, however, expressed at the final decision of the judges, Mesdames Colquhoun and Tui’k, who were heartily thanked for undertaking the onerous duty. The programme was a lengthy one. Miss M. Connors presided at the piano and played for the dances, Mrs J. Kidd playing extras. A full list of names, programme, prizewinners, etc., is as follows: — .
