MEN REFUSE WORK

Away from Home HON. R. SEMPLE WARNING. CHRISTCHURCH. December 13. A suggestion that it might be difficult to get men for the building o groynes to check erosion in the upper reaches of the Waimakariri River because of the distance of tne job from the city, was dealt with by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple when he heard a deputation from the Waimakariri River Trust to-day. “If there is work to be done, the men will have to go tnere,” the Minister said. “The men are not going back on the streets or sustenance We won’t stand for that, they wni have to get on the job. The pioneers of this country went out and looked for their work. Some of the modern men refuse to go into a tent that someone has built for them. If tnere is work to do in New Zealand, men must go where the work is. We won’t find jobs xor men at their doors, nor next to jazz halls.’’ Mr Semple’s remarks found general and expressed support amongst tne members of the deputation, who previously had said mat the problem ot getting men to uie work had been •very difficult, because men did not like leaving their homes, and daily transport to and from Ihe job would be obviously impracicable.
