After a close contest, Malvin Connolly, a pupil of the Marist Brothers’ School, won the competition with 10 points. Misses D. Tunnell and Hodgson tied for second place with 9 points each.

The Cook River bridge on the Main South Road has been so far completed as to permit of the passage of traffic, and the first motor car crossed the structure last week. The completion of the bridge enables motorists to proceed as far south as the Karangarua River without having to ford any major creeks or rivers, and makes it quite easy for cars to go to Bruce Bay in favourable conditions.

A large school of groper was encountered by Scandrett’s trawler, Annabella whilst fishing in the Greymouth roadstead on Sunday. The result was probably the biggest haul that has been landed at Greymouth. There were over 100 fish in the catch, the weight of which exceeded two tons. Some of the groper were exceptionally large, five exceeding lOOlbs.

A Timaru Press Association telegram states: Mr. D. C. Kidd, of Burke’s Pass, Fairlie, was chosen last night, by the Waitaki selection committee of the National Party to contest the Waitaki election. His nomination was put forward by the principal branches of the party. Mr. Kidd is Dominion President .of thei Crown Tenants’ Association, and a Crown tenant representative on the Canterbury Land Board, and holds one of the MacKenzie County seats on Timaru Harbour Board. Before last election, when the candidature of Mr. T. D. Burnett for Temuka seat was doubtful, Mr. Kidd was the selection to represent the National Party Instead, if necessary.
