HOKITIKA NOTES

EOur Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, December 10. The Fire Brigade has advised the Borough Council that in the matter of the new Fire Station, it prefers the present site to any alternative one. Last month’s abattoir fees totalled £69. and for October, £5B 16s 6d. A bullock and two sheep were condemned. For the two months, stock slaughtered were: Cows 45, heifers 49, bullocks 131, sheep 509, lambs 9, pigs 18, calves 5. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, fines of 5s each with costs, were imposed on four persons for being on hotel premises after hours, and also fines of £2 each, with costs on the licensee and barman of the Red Lion Hotel, for whom Mr M. B. James appeared, pleading guilty to charges of keeping open and supplying respectively after hours. Fines of 10s with 10s 6d solicitor’s fee, were imposed for allowing stock to wander, on R. Stuart (Kanieri), and T. M. Staines at the instance of the Borough Inspector, for whom Mr M. B. James appeared. A similar penalty was imoosed on Jas. Polson, Greymouth, on the information of the Borough Inspector, for whom Mr James appeared, for incorrectly parking a motorcar in Revell Street. The Magistrate (Mr R. Ferner) dismissed a charge brought by the police against Douglas Haig Rose, motor mechanic, of Greymouth, for operating a motorcar on the Hokitika-Greymouth Main Highway, at Arahura, on October 30, without a warrant of fitness.- Defendant was involved in a collision at Arahura, and when interviewed by'a constable, had said he was unaware as to whether or not a warrant of fitness had been issued for the car. In answer to a question by His Worship the constable said he (the constable), could not say definitely whether of not there was a warrant. It ’ was quite likely that there was a warrant. The Hokitika arrived from Wellington and Greymouth this afternoon and after unloading, loads timber, sailing to-morrow afternoon for Wellington, A large plate glass window in tho showroom of a local tradesman was broken this morning, when a roll of linoleum that was being handled, crashed through it. A.D, Bards reported four members on the sick list. Sick pay amounting to £l5 was passed; also £6 maternity bonus. Four rinks of Runanga bowlers tomorrow visit here for a match with the local club.

The Licensing Bench held its quarterly meeting to-day, there being present Messrs R. Ferner, S.M. (Chairman), J. Kyle, J. B. Kent, and T. B. Chesterman. Hon. J. Goodall, M.L.C. and Mr F. McGregor sent apologies for absence. Inspector Scott of Greymouth, and Sergeant Gilligan represented the police. Mr C. H. Hoskin (Inspector of Awards) the Labour Department; Mr F. Schou, the Health Department; and Messrs M. B. James, A. R. Elcock and J. W. Hannan (Greymouth), the various applicants. Renewals granted were: Murphy’s Hotel, Kumara, W. Benyon; City Hotel, Ross, Matthew Nolan; Gilmour Hotel, Greymouth, W. E. Roberts; Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Greymouth, Anne Mclntyre; Paroa Hotel, Paroa; Empire Hotel, Hokitika, R. Furness. The following applications for renewals were adjourned. until the next quarterly meeting in March: Occidental Hotel, Hokitika, D. F. Freitas; Dominion Hotel, Hokitika, Spencer E. Browne. Transfers granted were: Empire Hotel, Hokitika, R. Furness to E. T. Sheriff; Commercial Hotel, Nelson Creek to R. Scott; Suburban Hotel, Greymouth E. M. Quinn to J. McGrath; Edward Dinerle Davis, Clydesdale Hotel. Ross, to Frederick James Poole: Erie C. H. Chisnall, Lake lanthe Hotel. Pukekura. to Walter Charles Chisnall. The Bench granted applications for certificates of waiver in regard to the following transfers:—William Hall, Dunedin Hotel. Hokitika, to Thomas William Butler; Frederick James Poole, Empire Hotel, Ross, to Burther Burton Daily.

At the Borough Council’s monthly meeting last evening, there were Crs. L. Michel, T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, E; Teichelmann, E. L. Park and A. R. Elcock. Apologies were received from Crs. H. T. Parry and A. Thompson. Accounts amounting to £lO5 16s Sd were passed for payment. Water supply account payments of £986 2s were ratified, as were other payments, amounting to £BBO 3s Bd. Permission was granted. Mrs E. Higgins to subdivide section part 3325 and others (D.P. 221), Stafford. Street. Messrs Park, Murdoch and James, advising that in regard to the stopping of the street between the sections 18, 52, 48 and 16, town of Hokitika,, the Magistrate had confirmed the decision of the electors that the street be stopped a J nd a permanent record of the stopping had been made by the Chief Surveyor and accordingly the street is now stopped. Th’ey also asked that the Council pursuant to section 194 (1) of the M.C. Act, 1933, appoint a competent valuer to value the portion of land now stopped in order that it 'may be -transferred to Robert Ford and Co. Ltd., and Edward McDonnell, the owners of the adjoining sections. It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor to attend to. A petition was received from several residents of Upper Revell Street, between Hampden and Park Streets, asking that the Council instal a drain to carry away rain water which at present lies in the low-lying areas. After a. little discussion, in which it was disclosed that Mr Macfarlane had made a survey of the road levels and had proposed a drain be taken down through private sections in Tancred Street; it was decided that he be instructed to make a survey of the best line of levels for a drain, prepare a plan and estimate the cost ot same, and also the complications involved. The slaughterman applied for the Council’s permission to accept wages in lieu of his leave, which he was unable to take as no one could be obtained in his place. Hokitika Savings Bank manager advised the trustees are prepared to sell to the Council a moiety of Section 55, approximately 12ft wide, along the southern boundary of the section (area of 4 perches) for £3O, stating the whole of tlii land could be acquired at a lesser cost than the existing Government valuation. It was resolved the land be purchased for the purpose of extending the roadway. C. H. W. Wells was permitted to sub-divide Lot 1 of D.P. 830 part section 1293 and 1294 so that each moiety will contain 18.7 perches. It was agreed to reduce to £2 the license fees for four kerbside petrol pumps belonging to 'the N.Z.R. Road Services. Mr J. Hagar and other residents, Lower Livingstone Street drew attention to growth of blackberries and gorse in that area between Weld and Stafford Streets, asking that the matter be given attention.—Referred to Public Works Committee. At the Warden’s Court the following applications were granted to-day: Andrew J. Dillon, 5 ordinary prospecting licenses of 100 acres each, Blks. V and IX, Otira; N.Z. Prospecting and Mining Ltd., 2 ordinary prospecting licenses, 50 and 100 acres, Blk 1, Totara S.D.; Hilda M. Irwin, residence site 2 roods, Crown Lands, Blk. V, Kanieri S.D., 42 years; John Pearson; 4 ordinary prospecting licenses of 100 acres each, Blks. VII and XV, Totara S.D.; also two ordinary prospecting licenses, 100 acres each, Blks. VII and XV.
