The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Cowan took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. There was a large attendance and the service at St. Patrick’s Church; Greymouth and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. Father P. O’Me'eghan, of Ahaura.

Rev. D. J. Davies B.Sc. of All Saints Church, Kilbirnie, has been appointed vicar of St. Paul’s pro-Cathe-dral, Wellington, as successor to Canon Percival James, who is now vicar of Halifax, England. Rev. Mr. Davies is expected to go to St. Paul’s toward the end of February.—Press Assn.

The oldest surviving early settler of Stafford in the person of Mrs. Catherine Mitchell passed away at me Westland Hospital on Saturday afternoon atjer a long illness. The late Mrs. Mitchell who was born at Magherselt, Ireland 87 years ago, arrived in Stafford in the earliest days of its settlement and had resided there ever since. The late Mrs. Mitchell possessed a fine disposition which endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, and her demise will be learned of with deep regret on all parts of the West Coast where the deceased lady and her family are -well and popularly known. The late Mrs. Mitchell leaves to mourn her loss a family of four sons and four daughters, having been predeceased by her husband. The daughters are Sisters Mary Patrice, (Convent Notre dame des Missions, Opotiki) and Mary Canice (Convent Notre Dame des Missions, Petone), Mrs. Heil, Stafford) and Miss K. Mitchell (Wellington), whilst the sons are Messrs William (Christchurch), Peter (Stafford), Thomas (Whangarei) and Edward (Greymouth). The funeral will take place at the Stafford Cemetery this morning following . Requiem Mass at the Catholic Church at nine o’clock.
