OKARITO G.D. COMPANY. “If (he investor is lo continue to gamble in mining, more encouragement is needed and at present Labour is doing its best to kill it,” said Mr J. E. Wheeler, chairman of directors of the Okarito Five Mile Gold Dredging Company at the annual meeting at Dunedin. “In common with all mining concerns we have had a share of labour troubles on the claim. The more prosperous times bring higher wages, shorter hours, and discontentment. The company has always paid higher wages, and during the depression did not reduce wages. The various claims made against the company since the advent of the new Government show little appreciation of this. In future employees cannot expect tne company to do more for their benefit than the law says. Personally, I hardly think the Government realises the extent to which the mining investor is helping to solve unemployment problems. There have been quite a number of successful claims for back pay in mining. From the way these men are claiming one would think gold-mining ventures were handsome dividend paying concerns, in place of which one in 10 pays dividends and quite a number lose everything.” KANIERI G.D. COY. The directors of Kanieri Gold Dredging, Ltd., in their first report, anticipated that mining operations wlil begin about the middle of next year. The dredge is being built in New Zealand of Australian materials. The accounts to March 31 show dredge expenditure at £12,971, and administrative expenditure at £5301. Cash was £11,121, other funds £12,209 and debtors £13,540. PRICE OF GOLD. Gold is quoted in London at £6 19s 6d per ounce.
