HOKITIKA NOTES

£Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, August 18. The Fire Brigade obtained the sum of £4B from its recent ball, including donations. Constable Gilmer, late of Cnristchurch, has taken up duty here. The death occurred yesterday at Ross of a well-known resident, Mrs Whittle, wife of Mr Evan Whittle, at the age of 71 years. She had been for many years a resident of Ross. A well-known resident of the district, Mr Frank Rodomski, passed away at Kanieri, at the age of 74 years. A native of Poland, he came as a youth to the West Coast, engaging first in the gold mining industry and for the past thirty years he had been in the employ of the sawmilling nrm of Stuart and Chapman, and of Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills,, Ltd. Deceased, who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him, leaves a widow and a family of five daughters, Mrs J. Whitiskie (Goldsborough), Mrs E. Breeze (Hokitika), Mrs A. Stapleton (Christchurch), Mrs A. Bryson (Sheffield), and Miss Frances Radomski (Kanieri), also two sons, William and Phillip (Kanieri). Four brothers reside in the North Island. A traverse on ski of the Southern Alps from the headwaters of the Rakaia River to the Franz Josef Glacier has just been completed by three members of the Christchurch Ski Club. It is considered a remarkable feat of ski-mountaineering, for although similar traverses have been done on foot in the summer, they have not previously been attempted in winter or on ski. Every stage of the trip was completed according to a schedule worked out last year. The members of the party set out on Saturday August 7, and arrived at Waiho last Sunday. They then travelled by air to Hokitika, and were able to observe from above the route they had covered on ski. At a meeting of St. Mary’s Debating Club a committee was formed to conduct fortnightly, dances, commencing on Friday next with a benefit dance. The evening was devoted to readings. In connection with a debate arranged with the Debating Club of the Labour Party, the latter suggested that the question be: That socialist economy would be of greater benefit to New Zealand than tne present capitalist system.” The subject suggested by St. Mary’s Club had been “Is socialism, which is the avowed object of the New Zealand Labour Government, in the best interests of New Zealand?” To overcome any inaccuracy in the latter suggestion, it was decided to ask if the Labour Partv would agreq to substitute ' the word “Party” for the word “Government,” or, in the alternative, agree to substitute in the other suggested subject the words “socialist system for “socialist economy.” It was also decided, if the Labour Party agreed to make the debate open to the general public. , The Land Board yesterday granted the following applications for timber splitting licenses:—A. H. Thelin applied for 30 acres in part Sections 2765 and 2766, Block I, Kopara S.D.; Mr. A. Graham an area of Crown Lands near Lady Lake; Hanhan Boxmaking Co.
