SPORTING

N.Z. HORSES IN AUSTRALIA. YESTERDAY’S RACES. (Received August 18 at 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 18. Several prominent Spring candidates participated in the Rosebery races to-day. Silver Standard was beaten into second place in the second division of the Flying Handicap, by Bullrozer, with Birthday Boy unplaced. El Senorita ran poorly in the first division of the same event which was won by Casicasado. Sir Regent won' the Alexandria Handicap of one mile, by 21 lengths from Old Rowley and Verlina, while Latharna finished strongly into fourth place. Odilion and Campaneus were unplaced. Bronze Tulip and Gold Standard were unplaced in the three and four year old Maiden Handicap, which was won by Mirth. MELBOURNE, August 18. At the Ascot races to-dav, the Yarborough Handicap was won by Silver BondRacing Notes Settlement: Settlement, a Night Raid three-year-old. is out of a smart mare in Receipt, and he has looks to recommend him. Happy Night: Happy Knight has failed too often to be" the champion some people would lead us to believe. The Surgeon: The Surgeon should make a hurdler of no mean order. Golden Sheila: Golden Sheila has been recommissioned, and, with Mungatoon and Lagoon, in the meantime is being worked on her owner’s private track at Waihou. The Gay Shield filly is in splendid trim to commence her season’s preparation. Cocksure: Cocksure is expected by his connections to make a good stayer later on. He is a thred-year-old by Cockpit from Sapient.

Showing Ability: Mr R. B. Hines’ two-year-old Kingcraft. and Miss Briefly are now being given short sprinting work on the Te Aroha tracks and are commencing to show gallcrping ability. The former greatly resembles his sire, Kin" Lu, in size and general conformation and is certainly a promising juvenile. Miss Briefly, a full-sister to Miss Lu, is developing splendidly, having grown over two inches since being" put into work a few weeks ago.

Catalogue: Catalogue was not produced on the final day at Riccarton, as it was considered that he had had enough for the time being, and his stable had a strong second string in Old Surrey. He will now have a brief respite, ana he will then be set on a preparation for the next New Zealand Cup in November.

Tidewaiter: Among the disappointments at Riccorton this week was Tidewaiter, who never looked like being in the finish in either of his two first starts.

Fidelis: , , , Fidelis, who is a full brother to Catalogue, is progressing nicely. Lickem: ...

Lickem bears a very bright appearance and is well fors ard for early spring racing. He will probably be seen out at Wanganui. Lickem’s tow-year-old racing last season was not of a very strenuous nature and at his last appearance at Awapuni in May he outclassed a good field of juveniles.

Hard Puller: Swift and Sure is a ery hard puller and his trainer H. Mills is set a difficult task to give him the work he requires.

Friesland: Friesland appears more forward than Lowenberg and should not take tong to reach racing condition.

Epris: Epris showed something like a return to form at Riccarton, and he may be found showing up at the spring meetings.

Bred Right: Redolent is bred to go further in the jumping game if he can oe kept sound. Not only is he a son of Panmure, but his grandma, Bealy, a mere pony herself, was by Apremont from Queen Bee, who was dam of the 1904 Grand National Steeplechase winner Slow Tom. RACING FIXTURES.
