fOur Own Correspondent] Buller Rugby Union: WESTPORT, August 17. Mr F. Keating was in the chair at the weekly meeting of the Buller Rugby Uunion held last evening. Messrs W. Kelly and R. Harden were appointed joint managers of the Buller primary schools team for the Sedi den Shield districts tournament. An application from Zipp restaurant to display the Seddon Shield before the Nelson match was held over. The secretary’s action in accepting 59 extra seats for the new uncovered stand erected for the test match at Christchurch was endorsed. The secretary was instructed to forward particulars of Buller players’ ages, weight, etc., to Celtic Club, Greymouth for purpose of preparation of a programme for the Springboks’ match. The West Coast Union wrote congratulating Buller on winning the Seddon Shield and Mr D. R. Dowell, Albion Hotel, Greymouth, wrote complimenting the Buller players on their behaviour. The secretary was authorised to arrange for transport of the Buller players to Greymouth for the Springboks-Combined game. The players are to assemble at Greymouth ft 10 a.m. on Monday, 23rd inst. The Buller Football Association was granted the use of Victoria Square for the Peter Dawson cup games on September 25 and October 16. Messrs Reid (2) and Hill (2) were granted transfers to Ranger team. Golden BayMotueka Union confirmed August 28, as the date for the Seddon Shield challenge game. Names of Buller players engaged in the Seddon Shield districts schools tournament at Motueka are to be forwarded to the secretary of the tournament committee. It was decided to as.. the New Zealand Rugby Union to appoint a referee for the Seddon Shield game at Westport. Arising out of a discussion regarding a request to business people to close their promises on the occasion of the Seddon Shield match the secretary mentioned that there was a possibility of Wednesday of that week being observed as a halfholiday, the occasion being the Springboks’ game at Greymouth. However it was the general practice to close for Seddon Shield matches. The opinion was expressed that the Coast Union should arrange lor a manager to accompany the Buller players in the combined team to Greymouth. Mr Casey was of the opinion that in view of the importance z of tne Seddon Sheild match on the following Saturday that some member of the Union should accompany the team and arrange for their departure after the game. If the Springboks were defeated the players could be excused for indulging in a little celebration, but on the whole they were a fine lot of chaps and desired to get home as soon as possible after the game. The secretary pointed out, in reply to a question, that the Coast Union received one-third of the net gate, but the Buller Rugby Union hoped to receive a grant from the profits of the tour which promised to be big. Mr H. Casey was appointed locSl manager of the Buller team on the day of the match. it was decided to play the Old Boys v. Westport Albion Cup game as the final for tbf Ambury Cup also. It was decided redraw the attention of the Referees’ Association to a complaint regarding some officials failing to keep their engagments. It was decided that the Buller team for the next Seddon Shield match assemble on Victoria Square at 10 a.m. on the Thursday before the game. A long discussion took place regarding the allocation of tickets for the test match at Christchurch, and it was finally agreed that Messi's A. Colvin, W. Craddock and R. Shrimpton act as a sub-committcc to deal with the whole matter, it was decided that all applications for tickets must be in by Thursday at 7 p.m. in writing, with full particulars as to whom the reservations are for.

The funeral of the late John Dixon Jack took place yesterday afternoon at Orowaiti Cemetery when the esteem in which deceased was held in the mining districts was shown by the large attendance of mourners who attended. The graveside service was conducted by Rev. H. L. Wilkinson, and the pall-bearers were Messrs F Connew, C. Barnes, F. Ireland and H. BattershalL

Obituary: The death occurred at the Buller Hospital to-day of Mr. Edward Henry Easton. A native of Dunedin, the deceased was 64 years of age. He had until recently been employed by the Marine Department at Westport. He is survived by a widow and five sons.

Rep. Footballer: Mr. A. D. Strachan, the Buller Rugby Rep., will not now be going to Moonlight, Otago, to take up the position of Sole Teacher there. Having been advised that the attendance does not warrant the expenditure necessary in putting in order the teacher’s residence, which has been unoccupied for two years, Mr. Strachan has been allowed to withdraw nis acceptance of the position. The approval of the Minister of Education was received by the Nelson Board to restrict the attendance at Sergeant’s Hill School to 32 pupils and the secretary was instructed to give notice that certain pupils must attend Westport School from the beginning of next term. The resignation of Miss Lambert, sole teacher, Tiromoana, was accepted. Miss A. McNamara, sole teacher, Kikiwa, was appointed assistant mistress at Seddonville till the end of the year. Owing to a falling off in attendance at the secondary department, at Denniston, no appointment of an additional assitant was made. The Education Department notified the Board that Mr G. Overton had been re-appoint-ed senior inspector to Nelson Education Board.

Basketball: A big gallery of spectators tuinc.i out last evening for the basketball games when the four leading teams in the competition met. Technical Old Girls’ A beat St. Mary’s College A 10 to 8, and Technical School A beat Rangers by 14 to 1. The dual victory of the students gave their large‘number of supporters present much pleasure.
