TOur Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, August 17. Mr. W. A. Thompson, of Weld Street, Hokitika, celebrated his 96th. birthday to-day. Mr. F. Nightingale, of the Taumaranui “Press,” arrived last evening by the express on a holiday visit. A serious accident happened in a mining claim at Kanieri Forks this morning, where Mr. Herbert Winter, a youth 20 years of age, of Kanieri, was crushed by a fall of stone while working in a mining claim. The young man sustained a badly frac J tured pelvis on the left side. He was taken into Westland Hospital, where he received the necessary attention. His condition this afternoon was quite good. . Rimu Flat dredge return last week exceeded 369 ozs. of gold. At a meeting of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union last evening, Mr. A. H. Lawn presiding, it was resolved to allocate the test match tickets, one each to senior clubs, one each to Mrs King, M. Davidson, W. Kearns, and C. L. Harper. The fixtures for Saturday' will be fixed at Greymouth Senior matches are only to be played. It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to plough No. 1 ground as soon as the season closes. At the Hospital Board’s meeting the quarterly financial statement showed receipts, £2,548 3s lOd; payments £3,690 Is Id, on general account, receipts £B3l 3s 9d, and payments £240 on capital accounts; and payments of £3,657 on building fund account. Mr. T. W. Duff, was appointed the Board delegate to the committee of the sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. The Director-General of Health forwarded copy of a letter sent to Mr J. O’Brien, re casualty stations in South Westland, notifying the Department had resolved to make a grant towards the erection and equipment of same. Hokitika Fire Board wrote in connection with Borough water supply fittings. The chairman ( Mr. Duff) said he had gone into the matter with the engineer, who reported that the necessary alterations to supply fittings should be effected. He moved the matter of connecting up with the town supply, etc., be left in the hands of the engineer, and that Messrs Duff and Park and the engineer be appointed to investigate the position of securing suitable pipes, etc. It was further resolved that the Fire Brigade be given a donation of £2 _2s. The Labour Department advised of its subsidy for men to be employed cleaning the grounds ana on farm work.

Messrs M. Houston and Co. report that at Arahura Sale, they sold 38 fat cattle, prices ranging from 08/' per 100 lbs. for best beef to 31s. for good cow beef. Sales were: On account of C. and L. Gibb, 2 heifers at £lO 2s 6d; 2 bullocks at £l2 7s 6d, at £ll 17s 6d, 2 at £l2 7s 6d, 3 at £l2 7s 6d, 2 at £ll 7s 6d, 2 at £ll 12s 6d, 2 heifers at £lO 12s 6d, 1 at £l2 2s 6d; on account of a client, 2 cows at £7 17s 6d, 2 at £8 7s 6d, 2 at £6 7s 6d, 2 at £6 17s 6d, 2 at £9 2s 6d, 2 at £8 7s 6d, 2 at £7 12s 6d, 2 at £7 2s 6d, 2 at £6. Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. report having held a successful sale at the Arahura yards. There was a full complement of buyers. Prices were firmer compared with the previous fortnight. Isolation Ward: Repairs to windows and heaters, steriliser and sluice room bowl. Cottage: Installed lights and heating paints. Piping steam: Repaired leak calorifier and kitchen urn. Water: 'Plot water disconnected, Old Women’s Home, cold water disconnected Old Women’s Home. General: Repairs to plough discs, dray, two barrows, water tank indicator and overflow pipe and supply pump, laundry wringer and farm tools. The financial statement showed receipts £ll6B 9s sd, expenditure £1633 9s Id. Accounts amounting to £l5BO 18s Id were passed for payment. A proposal to appoint a junior office assistant was discussed. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Duff, Elcock and Park was appointed to consider the matter.
