SPORTING

Racing Notes Concertpitch: Concertpitch ran well at Riccarton, but found others rather too good for him at the weights. Tide Waiter: Tide Waiter made a bold show in lhe Redcliffs Handicap, but Waitaka measured him off at the finish. Rival Hit: Rival Hit was picked out as the best young horse seen at the Grand National meeting. Waitaka: Waitaka did not appear to have much chance in the Redcliffs Handicap on his previous form at the meeting, but evidently each race improved him. Araboa: Taking a line through Alma, Araboa appeared to be one of the besthandicapped horses in the Selwyn Handicap, but the best he could do was to pip Epris for third place.

Old Surrey: As a result of his form in the Winter Cup, Old Surrey was solidly supported in the Selwyn Handicap, and the judgment proved correct, as he won in convincing style.

Dictate: Dictate was a strong order for the Heathcote Handicap, but although always in a winning position he failed to get amongst the money at the finish.

Greek Shepherd: The handsome Iliad horse Greek Shepherd was started twice at Riccarton, but carried far too much condition to show anything near his form. He pulled up sound and well, and will probably stand another preparation, which would be assisted by being trained in the English style of working in a quarter. Stripped gallops are uncommon in England, and in the case of such a heavy topped horse as Greek Shepherd a quarter sheet would help to reduce his bulk without placing too much tax on his legs.

Willie Win: General opinion had it that Willie Win was only half ready to race when he went out for the Heathcote Handicap, which he won, and paid a large dividend in consequence of the reports about his condition. When he came back to the birdcage he would not have blown out the proverbial match, and he had obviously got through far more work than rumour stated. Willie Win is booked to be shipped to Melbourne on September 2 and will not be raced at the Sydney meetings until after the Melbourne Cup meeting.

In Good Shape: Wild Chase and Paper Slipper are in work at Riccarton, and both look in fine lusty condition and ready to train on for spring engagements. Wild Chase has furnished into a hne colt, and Paper Slipper seems sounder in front than when racing last season.

Davolo: Davolo looked a bit light when racing last week, and the fact no doubt contributed to the good place dividend he paid in the Heathcote Handicap, in which he came with a fast run at the finish. Trotting Notes Consistent: . King’s Play is a cup horse in the making. In his last four starts he has recorded three wins and a second. De Soto: , . , De Soto paced well enough at Addington last week to suggest that he has only to keep sound to get on the winning list again. The Best Time: . When King’s Warrior finished second to Lucky Jack, he went 4mm 8 4-ssec, the best time of the meeting for two miles. Further Wins Likely: Aide de Camp is one of the most improved horses in his class, and he has not finished winning yet. Impressive: The American pacer U Scott registered impressive performances at Addington. He showed a thrilling burst of speed to take the lead about a furlong from home in the Islington Handicap, and if the pace had bee on in the early stages, he would have stepped well inside 4min 27sec. Successful in Last Drive. j S. Shaw, who was recently appointed stipendiary stew^ ld ’ lr d, /’ S o n hie career as trainer and driver on Friday al Addingion. aonropriale exit from this branch 01 the sport by driving Tempest to victory in the Farewell Handicap.
