Hopes that a better entry to Okarito for ships may be obtained have been raised by the closing of the channel existing of late. A sum of £lOOO was spent in an endeavour to close the channel, and to enable a new channel to be cut along the new protective works, but this proved a failure. This should not be possible as soon as the lagoon rises again.
