NOT TO SMOKE

IN SCHOOL OR GROUNDS Order to Auckland Teachers [Per Press Association]. AUCKLAND, August 16. Instructions that they are not to smoke, either inside the school buildings or in the school grounds, have been issued to the teachers under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Education Board It is stated that the recent destruction of several schools by fire has been responsible for the Board deciding to prohibit its teachers from smoking, until they are well clear . of the school grounds. Although some of the Headmasters practice of requesting their., teachers have for many years, follow&d ?r the to refrain from smoking in the sence of the children, other Headmasters have raised no objection to the teachers smoking either in the staff rooms during the intervals, or in the class rooms after school, when marking papers, or attending to [ other duties which require them to remain behind after the children I have gone. l’ In future this practice, which is I described by several teachers as beI ing a very welcome relaxation, is to be definitely forbidden. ■ ‘lt may not be a very grave hardship,” said one teacher, “but it certainly deprives us of a luxury that has been very much appreciated by a large number of teachers.”
