SOCCER

WESTERN BEAT RUNANGA. Only one .local senior fixture was set down for Saturday, Blackball being drawn to meet Taylorville at home in the Heslin Cup competition Rungana were in Christchurch playing a return match with Western. Strange to say the margin of victory was again one goal, and as Western were successful this time it means that honours are even between the two teams. A full round of third grade fixtures were played under ideal conditions. WESTERN 3, RUNANGA 2. Western and Runanga met at English Park with conditions perfect for football. Western were without the services of Cawtheray but fielded very much the same team as met Runanga earlier in the season. The teams were:— Western: J. White; Roberts, McMilan; Henderson, Gordon, Mollinson; M. White, Smith, Hori, Ives, W. White. Runanga: Close; Armstrong, Craig; Shotton, W. Watson, R. Watson; Luke, Scott, White Pattinson, Crowe. Runanga were somewhat slow in adapting themselves to the conditions and Western took up the offensive The fast play of the home-side quickly gave them a two goal advantage, Smith and Mallinson being the scorers. Just before half-time Ives notched Western’s third goal.

On resumption Runanga did much better and strove hard to reduce the leeway. Their play speeded up and the struggle was a dour one. At last their persistence was rewarded, J. White being the scorer. This was followed by a brilliant goal from Scott making the final score Western 3, Runanga 2.

THIRD GRADE. TECH B 2, TAYLORVILLE 0. The above teams met on the school-ground. Though overhead conditions were excellent the ground was somewhat rough making accurate football difficult. Tech held the territorial advantage throughout the first spell in spite of facing a glaring sun and light breeze but failed to score. In the second spell the forwards had numerous opportunities but failed to make the most of them, and it was about half-way through the spell before Philip gave Tech the lead. Right on time Cruse increased their lead with a well judged high dropping shot.' For Taylorville the diminutive goalkeeper, Erskine, the right-half, and McLean showed >• throughout. Bowkett at outsk*e-iert was responsible for some nice crosses. For Tech. Partridge, Dalzell, and Cruse was sound, Cruse especiallv being here, there and everywhere. Generally speaking the forwards lacked cohesion, Philip and Anderson being the best, though Anderson was inclined to hang on to 'the ball too long. RUNANGA 10, TECH C 0. The above teams met at Runanga and there was not the difference indicated by the score. Tech were much lighter than the home team and did well to hold them to two goals in The first spell. Though Tech had chances to open their score they were unsuccessful and full-time sounded with Runanga easy winners. ' SCOTTISH RESULTS
