GEORGE V MEMORIAL FUND. fAust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] LONDON, August 13. Although the appeal for the King George V National Memorial Fund ended last January, subscriptions from the public are still arriving. About £590,000 has now been received. Of this sum £125,000 is being set aside for the memorial site and statue. The gift by' the Government of State property' on a selected site was to another £BO,OOO. The remainder of the fund is being used for the establishment of playing fields, which will be known as “King George’s fields.” The sum now available for this purpose exceeds £431,000, the allocation of which is in the hands of the Administrative Council. GOVERNOR’S SWIM. ( MALTA, August 13. 1 Sir Harry Luke, the LieutenantGovernor of Malta, swam the five miles from the Island of Gozo to Malta in* 4hr. 48min. He was not fatigued. BRITISH RECRUITING. RUGBY, August 13. Eighty-eight thousand reservists, who are eligible for re-enrolment with the colours under the War Office scheme, are being circularised with particulars of the Government’s offer to test whether the Army would 'be more attractive, to recruits if it offered them the opportunity of longer service, with pension rights at the end. Arising from the British Note to the Locarno Powers, Italy and Germany have completed an exchange of views as to the possibility of a pact, but it is believed progress is impossible until there is peace in Spain. - ITALIAN MANOEUVRES. PALERMO, August 13. The strictest secrecy is being observed over the Italian manoeuvres in Sicily. Not even Italian journalists are allowed in the active areas.
