The engagement is announced of Ella Christina Robertson, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Robertson, Palmerston Street, and Malcolm Arnaud Scandrett, fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Scandrett, Greymouth. Mr. J. D. Pascoe, F.R.G.S., of Christchurch, a mountaineer well known for his excursions in the ' Southern Alps, has accepted an ap- 4 pointment under the National Historic cal Committee, which has been set up ft to issue for the Centennial a series of historical surveys of the first 100 years of the Dominion’s life. Mr J. E. Joyce, Registrar of Pensions, leaves on Friday evening on transfer to Whangarei. On Friday afternoon last he was met by the Greymouth Pensions Office staff. The presentation was made by Miss K. Mintrom, who expressed regret at Mr Joyce’s departure, and wished him the best of health and every success in Whangarei. A New York cable states President Roosevelt has appointed Senator Hugo L. Black to succeed Mr. Justice Devanter on the Supreme Court of the United States. Prior to his departure on Saturday on transfer to Wellington, Mr Thornhill Cooper, Overseer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, was farewelled by the local staff of the Department and presented with a wallet of notes. The presentation was made by the District Engineer, Mr R. T. Smith, who expressed appreciation of Mr Cooper’s work, and wished him health and success in Wellington. Other speakers were Messrs R. Simmers, J. A. Shannon, J. C. H. McDonald and J. Gagliardi.
