A severely sprained ankle was sustained on Saturday at Cass Square, Hokitika, by D. G. M. Gilbert had his foot caught on a wire rope which separates the two playing areas, and he gave his ankle a severe twist. It is hoped that the injury may not keep Gilbert out of the game for the remainder o* the season, but that he may be fit next week to play against the Springboks here in the Buller-West Coast combined team.

You may buy a box of matches for a copper'but sometimes you’d give more than that for it—if you could get it. The other day an Auckland hiker tramped, all on his lonesome, to the wilds of the Waitakeres. Presently he sat down on a fallen bluegum. and hungry for a smoke, pulled out pipe and pouch, only to discover he had no matches! “And so the poor dog had none!” By the way, the best ’baccy when hiking is “toasted,” because, you see, you can smoke pipe after pipe of it without feeling “fed up,” as you do with so many brands if you smoke them at all freely. Vou may get a sore tongue, or find your throat bothering you, or get “nervy.” But toasted never makes your tongue sore, never irritates your throat, never gets your nerves on edge. There are only five brands of the real toasted: Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold, and Desert Gold. Remember that when you buy. No good wasting your money on imitations. — Advt.

Frequent complaints have been made in recent weeks of the practice of pilots in flying low over sports fields, to the discomfort and often fear of players and spectators. About 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon a plane circled low over Wingham Park and dropped a missile to which was attached a small silk’ parachute. The missile was thrown out about the field of play, and had not the miniature parachute functioned properly, it was quite possible that a player or spectator would have been hit and injured. One spectator suggested that the day when one could hire a plane and throw rubbish on to the property of an unfriendly neighbour might not be far distant.
