HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, August 13. Mr. De Vinschi, bushman, employed at Ruatapu, met with an accident yesterday morning while at work, two bones being fractured in his left arm and hand, and his face also injured. De Vinschi, who is a single man, 35 years of age, was admitted to the Westland Hospital, where he is now progressing favourably. An early appearance in this district of the white butterfly looks nowise well for pastures and gardens. The Railway Department’s Rimu bus caught fire yesterday morning when being taken from the garage at Rimu, being considerably damaged, the driver, Mr. N. Alston, had his hands burned while endeavouring to put .the fire out. Another bus was put on to conduct the service.

There were six hundred present last evening at the juvenile plain and fancy dress carnival conducted bv the Railway Ball Committee at the Soldiers’ Hall, and at the conclusion of the children’s carnival, a dance, at which the Rhythm Orchestra provided the music, continued until midnight. Ballets by the pupils of Miss N. Darby- and Miss K. Walton were presented, but owing to the large crowd it was not possible to continue, musical programme which had been arranged. Mesdames B. L. amongst the children, a short dance programme following. With the cooperation of the management, West Coast Cinemas, Ltd. (Regent Theatre', every child received a free pass to a special matinee at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday, 28th. August. The Ball Com/nittee certainly deserve ever}' credit for the manner in which they carried out their programmes. St. Mary’s Debating Club, in view of a coming debate against St. Columba Club, Greymouth, held a debate between the B team and another team, on the question of whether the reintroduction of compulsory military training would be justified. The affirmative side, which Rev. Father O’Gorman adjudged the winners were Messrs W. Davies (leader), M. Moore and C. Haussman, who will represent the Club against Greymouth, while the negative speakers were Messrs M. Keen (leader), J. Davidson, and J. Hanrahan. At the monthly meeting of the lo cal branch of the Labour Party, Mr S. H. Dromgoole (vice-president) pre sided. The secretary reviewed the work of the Housing Committee, stat ing that most other communities wer--* making progress with the develop ment of local housing schemes, bul for some reason Hokitika lagged behind. The branch had learned, however, that a representative of thState Housing Department will shortly visit Hokitika, and it was hoped that his arrival will be followed bv some definite action. Reference was made to the departure for Grepmouth of Mr and Mrs D. R. Dowell, both of whom have been energetic members of the branch. Appreciation of their services was expressed, and the secretary was instructed to thank them, on behalf of the menders, for their support of the cause of Labour It was also resolved to communicate with the secretary of the Greymouth branch of the party, recommending Mr and Mrs Dowell. The Debating Society, which had been discussed al the previous monthly meeting, was formally inaugurated. Mr J. Fox was elected chairman, and Mr Wm. L. Robertson secretary. The following committee was appointed: Miss E. Parlane, Miss E. Dale, Messrs E. W. Heenan, S. H. Dromgoole, and J. Morrison. A challenge to debate with them was received from the St. Mary’s Debating Club, which was acThe subject for discussion is to ’be “The Comparative Merits of Socialism and Capitalism.” The Borough Council last evening received advice from the Commissioner of Crown Lands that he has been instructed to negotiate with the Council for the purchase for .housing purposes, of Lots 3,4, 18, 19, 20, 1.1, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, Whitcombe Square, and that the Council’s offer to transfer the whole of Whitcombe Square to the Crown has been considered, but was not acceptable, owing to the cost involved, but that some of the sections could be made use of by using existing services. Last month at the local abattoir there were slaughtered 37 cows, 22 heifers, 78 bullocks, 224 sheep, 5 lambs, 9 pigs, 11 calves. Condemned, 1 cow, 3 bullocks. Fees for month, £7O 15s 6d, as against £75 14s 6d for corresponding period last year. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co. delivered here in June 148 sheep and four lambs, and in July 135 sheep. The Borough Abattoir Committee is to finalise arrangements with the Refrigerating Company for the supply of runners for the abattoir.

The Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. E. L. Park, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, E. Teichelman, H. L. Michel, H. T. Parry. The financial statement showed receipts £714 7s 7d, expenditure £lOl2 12s 7d. Accounts amounting to £lOOO 2s 6d were passed for payment It was decided to support a resol|'ition of the County Council in favour of extending the railway in South Westland as

advocated by the Member for the District. Mr J. O’Brien. The R.S.A. was granted five loads of gravel for the footpath to the Soldiers’ Memorial plot. It was decided to grant Dr. R. F. Aitken’s request for a 100 c.p. light to he installed outside his premises in Brittan Street, he undertaking to pay the annual cost. It was decided to declare a half-holiday for the day the Springboks play at Greymouth. Cr. Park was appointed representative on the Red Cross Society. The Council decided against going on with the matter of passing places on the railway bridge. The Railway Department advised that at a cost of £550 two passing places could be provided on the bridge, about 40 feet long, with a total width of 17 feet between handrails, to enable ordinary traffic to pass large motor vehicles. E. E. Higgins was given permission to instal a well-built street crossing at his property in Stafford Street, and the manager of Blue Star Taxis to erect a verandah at new premises in Revell Street, and the latter’s request was approved for a concrete street crossing 24 feet wide at the building frontage. R. A. Campbell, consulting engineer, Christchurch, forwarded copies of blue prints for pump house and pump arrangements, suggesting trying two new 6in perforated pipes at the pump and asking authority to obtain quotations for pipes and valves, and to call for tenders for the pump house. The plans were approved. Kanieri Electric Ltd., is to be approached for drilling. Stewarts and Lloyds, Ltd., forwarded works test certificate for Bin mains, which indicates the mains have been tested to GOOlbs to the square inch hydraulic pressure, and found perfectly tight and sound. A grant of £2 2s was voted towards a South Island Travel Assn, booklet. Consent was given for the sub-divis-ion of a section in Upper Sewell Street in the estate of W. Jeffries. The Health Inspector reported an offensive trade in the borough, and it was decided to take action re registration. The Town Clerk reported arrangements for striking the rates, viz., Is 8d in the £, with sanitary fee 18s. The Mayor and Cr. Duff were appointed to confer with the County Council re the latter’s request for an area adjoining the Library to be reserved for new County offices. Mr C. E. Sparkes, sanitary contractor, was granted a wage increase of £lOO per annum. Kanieri Electric were granted permission to erect a verandah at their premises. Sub-divisions of sections were agreed to for J. Singer, Tudor Street, and W. M. C. Keech, Hall Street: and a transfer of Res. 587 Livingstone Street from A. S. Craig to A. W. O’Brien.
