DENNISTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Personal: Dr. P. Foote of Westport, paid a business visit to Denniston. Master Tom Muir, who underwent another operation for an injury to his arm, received whilst playing football,.early in the season, has returned home from hospital, but has to receive further treatment. Mrs Cowan, of Burnett’s Face, is a patient in the local hospital. Mr H. Greenwood, 6f Westport, agent for Ultimate and Gulbransen wireless sets, recently paid a business visit to Denniston. Mr B. Lightbown, of Burnett’s Face, who is suffering with an injury to his back, is a patient in the local hospital. Mr P. Smythe, of Denniston, who has suffered a breakdown in health, has been ordered by the doctor to rest completely for a few months. Women's Institute: Members of the Burnett’s Face, Benniston and Marshallvale Institutes accepted an invitation to attend the Granity Institute’s birthday. A most happy function, including a lengthy programme of vocal and musical items, with a plentiful supper, was thoroughly enjoyed. Denniston Library: There have been nearly 100 of the latest novels and books by popular authors placed on the shelves recently. The committee will welcome all new members. The genial chairman, Mr Mick Berry, has been indisposed for the past week, but many hope to see him on deck early. Negotiations are progressing for the disposal of the Rodgers wireless set which has done good service tor the club, and for the purchase of one oi the latest sets.- The last billiard tournament was most successful and some very close and interesting games were witnessed. There was a good gathering to witness the final between Messrs J. Caldwell and J. Morrow, which was won by the former. The younger players are hoping for another snooker tournament to be arranged.

Bowling Club: The annual meeting will be neld in the pavilion on Sunday afternoon, when it is to be hoped a full attendance of members will start the new season. A certain amount of work has been done to the greens, and many hands will make the necessag' work much lighter, in getting the green in good order.

Social: . The combined committees of the school, Plunket Society and Women’s Institute arranged a most successful euchre tournament and dance in the school, with a view to raising funds to assist the pupils to visit the Christchurch Winter Show. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs S. Braggin., and Mr B. Pearson. The dance was well attended and Mrs F. Lewis and Miss P. Warren supplied the music. Mr J. Allen acted as M.C.The ladies committee served a plentiful supper. The financial proceeds from the social will be handed to the school committee.

The Mines: The Denniston mines continue to work steadily, and since the new agreement, very few disputes have occurred. Unfortunately there was no electricity available last Saturday for the residents to listen-in to the races and the Springboks’ game. It is to be sincerely hoped that the company wnl allow the electricity to be available for the test match to-day. A ballot was taken on Wednesday for the positions of National dent and Australian delegate. The result will be learned from Mr Glover (returning officer), at Wellington, during next week.

Pirate Rugby Club: The officials of the local club and the members are to be congratulated on their efforts in assisting financially to run a third grade team. The youngsters need assistance, especially as travelling'from Denniston is most expensive, and also assistance for injured players. The club are applying for a free night at the Picture Hall, when they intend to hold an up-to-date dance, with the hope M raising funds to further their ambition, which is most deserving. Messrs T. Dellaway and W. Smythe will see to everything as far as the Pirates are concerned.
