PICNIC CRICKET

N.Z. v. CAHN’S TEAM Making it “Snappy” (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the tei.m.) NOTTINGHAM, August 11. Twenty-three wickets fell in a day of sensational cricket when the New Zealanders, met Sir Julian Cahns eleven. The wicket was exceptionally fast, Good batsmen on both sides were beaten by the exceptional bowling. Cowie and Carson bowled with such fire that the first five home wickets fell for twenty-seven. The whole side was out before lunch. Sir Julian Cahn’s team included several internationals, whose cheap dismissal reflected great credit on bowlers. Dempster was included after the team was first announced but was dismissed cheaply, as were Crisp and Morkel, the South African test playerse, and Mudge, the Australian. New Zealand wickets also tumbled quickly. The only players to stay long were Carson, Weir and Wallace New Zealand’s lead was small, but Cowie again bowled magnificently m Cahns second innings. Roberts, after a month s idleness, bowled without distress and may play in the test. Scores: — CAHN’S ELEVEN—First Innings. The English Team MACARTNEY’S CRITICISM. SYDNEY, August 12, Macartney, writing in the “Herald” says: England’s team for the final test against New Zealand should be superior, but although three changes have been made, the selectors have still hot adopted fully progressive measures. Macartney says that the reason for the inclusion of Matthews seems obscure. He is not a youth, and although he has fair performances, he has done nothing outstanding, and it seems strange that he should be preferred to J. W. A. Stephenson. GOVER REPLACES FARNES. LONDON, August 11. Fames has strained his side and Gover will replace him in the third test. Test Prospects GOVER TO BE FEARED. (Received August 12, 10.55 p.m.) NOTTINGHAM, August 12. Although Fames will be unable to play, through trouble with a strained side, the English team for the final test is probably just as strong with Gover included, especially as he is accustomed to the wicket at the Oval. Most of the critics expect the match to be drawn. Hadlee is receiving treatment in London for leg strain. Kerr and Moloiaey were both indisposed yesterday through summer sickness, which evidently was induced by muggy heat. All are expected to be fit for the test. j £ S AUSTRALIAN VISIT. SYDNEY, August 12. Mr Howard has received a cablegram from the New Zealand Cricket Council, agreeing to the New Zealand team touring Australia on the return journey from England. Mr Howard said that both Western Australia and Queensland were pressing for matches and he was endeavouring to arrange these extra fixtures. BLUNT AT NOTTS. (Received August 12, 10.55 p.m.) NOTTINGHAM, August 12. To-day the weather is dull, but the wicket is good. There is yet no progress score of the match N.Z. v. Cahn’s team. Blunt, the New Zealand cricketer, who was married recently, is twelfth man for Cahn’s team against New Zealand.
