HABEAS CORPUS
SOUGHT BY MOTORIST Negligent Driving Sentence [Per Press Association]. INVERCARGILL, August 12. In the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr Justice Kennedy, Mr Gordon J. Reed applied for a writ of habeas corpus for the release of Eric Clarence Taylor, garage proprietor, of Invercargill, who, on Wednesday, was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., on a charge of negligent driving, and was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Counsel claimed that the prisoner had been wrongfully convicted. The motion was mentioned this afternoon, when fixtures were being arranged, and his Honour said that, on such an application, counsel was entitled to be heard in priority to all other business. Mr Reed said he had just lodged an application, and was not yet ready to argue the matter. The Crown had not yet been served. His Honour suggested that counsel move for a rule nisi during the afternoon. and, at a later stage, his Honour _ M'.2d a rule nisi in chambers, and arranged to hear the substantive application on Monday morning.
