HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). Railway Carnival Ball: HOKITIKA, August 12. The popularity of the Hokitika Railway Grand Carnival Ball which ' was held in the Soldiers’ Hall last evening was shown by the attendance of 700 patrons at the second annaul ball. The arrangements were made by a committee consisting of Messrs A. J. Drummond (hon. secretary), W. G. Henderson, W. H. Intemann, L. A. Lewton, A. T. Couch, A. L. East, G. J. Phillips, B. L. Kempton, R. V. Fredric, J. Thomas, W. McDougall, E. C. Hocking, C. Haddock, N. McLeod. J. Eager. No effort was spared by the committee to make the hall more attractive than it has yet appeared for any ball, and with the red, white and green streamers together with Chinese lanterns along both sides of the hall, a more carnival atmosphere could not have been created. A feature of the decorations was the inclusion of a ‘‘moving travel” display which, when viewed from the entrance to the hall, presented New Zealand’s scenic, resorts in a condensed form, operating in such a manner as to give the impression the scenes were being viewed from a carriage window. Runn.ng around this display was a miniature electric railway ( with rolling 6 built to,scale and showing the lat ® SL developments in carriage desl ° ll6 ° the New Zealand lines. Suspended from the ceiling in the centre of the hall was one floodlight growing off four colours, while a 3000 candle power floodlight at the east endl of the hall provided all the light.
