MILLERTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Miss M. Clarke a former Millerton hockey player has been chosen to represent Wellington at the Invercaigill Dominion tournament. Mrs. G. Schaffer, of Blackball, is at present spending a holiday on the Hill with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. McKinlay. ' The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre has returned to Millerton after visiting Wellington. Swan’s Orchestra which has been reorganised made its first appearance when supplying the music for the grand ball at Little Wanganui. The usual monthly meeting of the Millerton Women’s Institute was held in the Rechabide Hall on Wednesday August 4th, Mrs. Corbett presiding over a largely attended meeting. The competition was a Cuddly Toy. . The roll call was “The Most Treasured Thing and Why?” The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Ninnes, Strang, Orman, and Sharpe. The singing of “Auld Lang . Syne' 1 brought a enjoyable evening to a close. The Millerton Caledonian Ingleside held there usual whist drive in the Rechabite Hall on Monday night.' Mrs R. Swan won the ladies’ prize and Mr. J-I. Mulgrave the men’s. A public meeting was held in Peggie’s Hall on Thursday night last when Mr. W. Clarke presided. In opening the meeting, the chairman asked that a secretary be appointed owing to the absence of the Union secretary (Mr. R. Jack) Mr B. Davidson was nominated. The chairman gave an outline of the reasons for calling the meeting and stated that a letter had been received from the Denniston Miners’ Union secretary in reference to the continuance of the supply of electric light to the two townships. The acting secretary then read out the correspondence after which a lengthy discussion followed, most of those present take part. A motion was carried that flat rate per unit for power be the basis and further that when a given number of units have been consumed, a reduction or a bonus be allowed for monthly payments. It was decided that the miners’ president and secretary, Messrs W. Clarke and R. Jack attend a public meeting to be called at Granity as soon as possible, and that Mr. W. Watson attend as representative of the public. It was further decided that the Millerton public support the Denniston request and that the delegates appointed communicate with the Denniston delegates as soon as possible to further the request and endeavour to reach an agreement with company officials. The chairman thanked those present and stated that they could rest assured that the delegates would do their utmost on their behalf. The local mine continues to work full time.

Mr. G. Orman returned to the Hill after taking part in the West Coast v. Buller Seddon Shield match. According to press reports on the game Orman still demonstrated his ability as a sound hooker, and the possibilities of the local player representing New Zealand in one of the tests against the Springboks is not beyond hope. The Thistle junior soccer team travelled to Burnett’s Face on Sunday last to play Bachelors and won by 3 goals to nil.
