LION CHASES CAR

DISTRICT LONG TERRORISED ■ DARING BRINGS DEATH. DURBAN, June 11. A lion, which has long l terrorised the Magut district of Northern Natal, has at last been shot. Three motor cars were driving from Magut to Pongola the other evening when one of them was suddenly chased by the lion. The driver was Mrs Gutsche, wife of an irrigation official. As there was no firearm in any of the cars, the party returned to Magut for a rifle. The district surgeon, Dr. Lombard, returned with others to the place .where the lion had been seen. H’s car was immediately charged by the lion, which raced from bushes nearby. Dr. Lombard fired and wounded the lion badly in the mouth, but not. sufficiently to stop it from making off into the bush. Here the beast was lost, and after searching until 1.30. a.m., the party returned to Magut. Soon after eight the next morning, another party returned to the hunt. On searching, they heard growling and groaning from a bush. A hunter climbed into the low branches of a tree and fired a shot at random in the direction of the noise. The lion at once came charging out of the grass, when a second shot killed it.

The lion measured 9ft. from top to tail.
