THE COMPETITIONS

The Competitions’ Committee met on Monday evening, when Mr. E. P. Peters, President, presided. The Secretary reported that, owing to Dr. Griffiths, who had been appointed to judge the music sections at the forthcoming festival being unable to undertake the work, due to his term concert at the Technical College in Dunedin, he had recommended Mr. Claude H. Davies for the position. Mr. Davies had agreed to do the work. The Committee confirmed his appointment as judge. Mr. Davies was one of the judges at the Dunedin Competitions last year, and also recently judged at Oamaru. The Secretary reported that donations had been received from Messrs J. Ballantyne and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, Ernest Adams, Ltd., Christchurch, and Miss Miriam Trott, also that cups had been donated by Mrs. ' Trott and Miss Billie Addis (Christ- ■ church) for the dancing sections, and by Mr. “James O’Brien, M.P., for the elocutionary sections. It was resolved to tender the thanks of the Committee for the donations received. The Secretary reported that the senior elocution and senior vocal entries showed a decrease on last year’s totals, but that the instrumental and dancing entry showed a considerable increase, which was regarded as satisfactory, and it was stated that the general position with other festivals was that dancing was the preponderating section, it being popular with the public. It was decided to invite the Mayor, Mr. W. Meldrum, to officially open the festival on Monday evening, 16th. instant, and to present the medals and exhibitions won by the Greymouth candidates at the Trinity College and Royal Schools of Music practical examinations last year, the Trinity College being represented by Very Rev. Father Long, and the Royal Schools by Mr. R-. T. Bush. As the exhibitioners are all past and present competitors at. the festivals, it was thought that the function would add to the general interest of the open- ; ing of the festival, apart from the ( suitability of the occasion for such ' purpose. .
