Won by Nocturnus WINTER CUP TO CATALOGUE. [Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. For the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National Meeting, first day, the weather was fine and the attendance the best for years. The track was in good order. The tote investments were £65,035 10s (Win £26,532 and Place £38,503 10s), compared with £53,307 last year. Results: — TRIAL HURDLE RACE.—6/6 SOLWIT (A. Stove) 1; 5/4 The Surgeon (V. With six furlongs to cover, Collision had charge to lead across the top from Cottingham, Jolly Beggar, Journet, Clarion Call, Last Link and Mount Vai. The leaders were the same into the straight and in a great finish Jolly Beggar beat Last Link oy a head, with Cottingham a similar distance away. Collision was fourth. Time 2.44 1-5. Cock o the North led past the Stands from Shillelagh Wood, Brigadore, Nocturnus, and Burglar. After jumping Cutts, Cock o’ the North was followed by Shillelagh Wood, Brigadore, Nocturnus Burglar, Forest Glow, and Royal Limond, who ran off at the post and rails, while Pahu did likewise at the first of the Kennels Double. Forest Glow fell at the top Brush for Cock o’ the North to lead past the stands from Brigadore, Shillelagh Wood, Nocturnus, Burglar and Irish Comet. Brigadore fell at the Stands Double and" Cock o’ the North came down at Cutts. This left Shillelagh Wood, Nocturnus, Burglar and Irish Comet in the race. Burglar was pulled up down the back. Nocturnus went to the front after the Kennels and led to the top Brush from Shillelagh Wood, and Irish Comet, who fell. Nocturnus won easily by 80 yards from Shillelagh Wood, with Irish Comet, who was remounted a furlong away. Royal Limond was the only other to complete the course. STEEPLECHASE. —3/3 SUNWARD (R. Register) 1; 2/2 Arctic Star (N. Trillo) 2; 1/1 Kelly the Crow (R- Beale) 3. Also started: 5/5 Lucidas, 4/4 Night Wind Won by one and a half lengths; 15 lengths, Lucidas was fourth.
