METROPOLITAN T.C. Reporter Wins INTERNATIONAL TO SUPERTAX. CHRISTCHURCH, August 7. The August racing carnival opened with the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting. Conditions were cold and overcast, a strong southerly blowing across the ground. Considering the amount of rain that fell yesterday, the track hau made a remarkable recovery, although it was a trifle dead for the opening event. There was a large attendance. McGirr, the gelding performed in a manner to suggest that he will soon reach Cup company. Rocks Ahead was a length away in second place after going a patient race, and in a strong finish was a length in front of Pot Luck, which was nursed to the straight, but tnen found Reporter and Rocks Ahead too good for him.

CLERK OF COURSE HURT. When the field had travelled two and a-half furlongs in the International Handicap, Village Guy broke a hopple and in drifting back throug the field, caused Grand Mogul to fall. Grand Mogul galloped* through the straight and as he was travelling past tne Show Grounds fence the Clerk of the Course (Mr R. A. Ferguson) mounted on his galloper, endeavouring to catch him. The horse cannoned into him and Mr Ferguson was thrown heavily to the ground. Willow Wave then collided with them, and his driver (S. A. Edwards) was thrown out. Mr Ferguson was taken in the ambulance to hospital and his injuries are regarded as very serious. Edwards and Stewart (driver of Grand Mogul), escaped with a shaking. Grand Mogul was not injured. In the Introductory Handicap, a protest was lodged by R. Townley driver of Lady Sonoma, against first position being awarded to Great Admiral, on the grounds that he paced at the finish. The protest was dismissed. On the finish of the Advance Handicap, arf inquiry was held to consider allegations of interference by C. Tasker (driver of Full Hand) with Harlequin, which was driven by J. Young. After hearing the evidence, it was resolved to caution Tasker for careless driving. F. G. Holmes, (driver of Graham Direct in the August Handicap), was charged under Rule 310, with not driving his horse to win. When the evidence of the owner, Mr J. Rosehill Races HANDICAP TO FIREMAN. (Received August 8, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 8. Stirring finishes were witnessed at Rosehilf races on Saturday. Four events were won by no more than a neck. Several New Zealanders were engaged, but only Deputy Ruler, who ran second in the First Division of the Flying Handicap to Moonray, was placed. The others, namely, R«bel Chief, Bronze Tulip, Birthday Boy, Stalin, Bengal Lancer, Improvement, Latharna, Golden Chance, and Viceroy were all unplaced in their respective races. The August Handicap resulted:— Fireman 8.8 (Finch) 1; Friars Switch 8.6 (Heather) 2; Dulcedo 8.12 (Reynolds) 3. Seven started, including Improvement. Won by half a neck, with half a neck between second and third. Time 2.6. Much interest, was evinced in the French horse Genetout,- having its first outing in the Second Division of the Flying Handicap, which was won by a head by Silver Rose from Tuckiar and Elsenorita. Genetout was a little at sea, but was galloping strongly near the finish, and was fifth. AUSTRALIAN HURDLES. DRESS SUIT WINS WELL. MELBOURNE, August 8. At the Caulfield races yesterday, the Australian Hurdle Handicap resulted: Dress Suit 9.6 (Fullarton) 1; Bridge of Mar 11.0 (Webster) 2; Highland Fling 10.7 (Driscoll) 3. The other starters included Triteleia, f'ulham, Menelik, Bakwood, King Siris. Kings Game, Precedor. Bridge of Mar tried to lead the whole way, being closely attended by Triteleia, Dress (Suit, Fulham, and Precedor. Approaching the seven furlongs post, Dress Suit took command, and was not troubled to win convincingly by six lengths, with twenty lengths between second and third. Triteleia was fourth. The remainder, except Precedor, fell. Time 6.45. Riddle was third in the Mornington Welter Handicap. Whernside was unplaced. Desert Chief was unplaced in the Balaclava Stakes. Pilot was unplaced in the Second Division of the Crimea Trial Handicap. The Moondah Plate resulted: Valiant Chief 9.2 (Breaslcy) 1; Auries Star 10.0 (Smart) 2; Regular Bachelor 9.5 (Creighton) 3. Eleven started, including Only. Won by one and ahalf heads; one and three-quarter lengths. Time 1.124. Valiant Chief was having his first run since his accident twelve months ago, when Voitre was injured. F. Peacock, rider of Fulham in the Australian Handicap Hurdles, sustained concussion. F. Jennings, rider of King Siris, also suffered concussion, also fractured ribs and general abrasions. Highland Fling broke down at the last hurdle.
