BLAKETOWN RATEPAYERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. There was an enthusiastic, attendance of forty at the annual meeting of the Blaketown and Preston Roa-t Ratepayers’ Association at the Blaketown Hall las t evening. Air .1. MeGirr presided. Votes of condolence were jiasseu with the relatives of the late James McGinley and L. Mason.

The election of officers for the ensu. ing year resulted:—Chairman, Mr W. Herring; Secretary, Air E. V. Ellery (pro tem); Treasuier, Air L. Shaker; Committee, Messrs J. MeGirr, F. Steni, Taylor, J. Kelly, junr., J. Efford and T. Willis.

The retiring secretary, Mr E. A'. Ellery, who lias occupied the position for the past, six years, declined' re. election, but agreed to carry on for three months until a suitable successor is found. Eulogistic. reference was mad e to the good work of the secretary on behalf of the Association, and members expiessed 1 regret at his inability to .again accept the position. It was decided that meetings be held on the first Susday of each'month at 7.30 p.m. After lengthy discussions on the various requirements! in the Blaketown and Preston Road areas, it was, decided that representations be made by letter on the following matters, to the Greymouth Boroughh Council, regarding fire mains in Packers’ Quay and Reid fttree't.; and regarding the state of the water channels, also asking for better lighting facilities in Preston Road; to the Greymouth Harbour Board, regarding the re-planking of the Blaketown-iPre.-ton Road Bridge; also for repairs to be carried out to the fence along the approach to the bridge; to the Health Department, regarding the filling in of frog ponds in Blaketown; to the Grey Main School Committee, requesting a further Standard at the Blaketown School; to the Postmaster, regarding the installing o f a post office and telephone booth, at Blaketown, (both being considered to be very necessary); to the Greymouth Fire Board', requesting inspection of the plant and the raising of the height of the bell tower; also on the matter of strengthening the local Brigade personnel. It was point, cd out that on a recent outbreak of fire at Blaketown, firemen who wee nearby lesidents, failed to hear the alarm from the firebell. It was decided to take up the usual collection from the Blaketown ami Preston Road residents at an ear.y date, to augment the funds of the Association.
