The death occurred suddenly, at Dunedin, of Mr David Stark, a former resident of the West Coast. For a number of years, he was employed as a stationmaster on fhe West Coast, but had since resided in Dunedin.

He is 'survived by his wife, formerly Miss Garth, of Ahaura, and a grown.up family.

Engineer Read-Admiral E. D. Sydenham, R.N., (retired), is visiting New Zealand. From the year 1910 to 1913, Rear-Ad'miral Sydenham was respoasible for the supply of fuel for the Navy in Australia, New Zealand and on the China station, and during that time he made Westport his headquarters as a coal centre, and it was there that he mariied Mrs Sydenham. RearAdmiral and Mrs Sydenham arrived from Christchurch on Saturday. They will spend some time on the .West Coast.

At the Wellington prison, the staff met to say farewell to the Superintendent, Mr John Down, who is retiring after 40 years’ service with the prisons Department. An armchair was presented' t° Mr Down on behalf of the staff by Mr B. L. Dallard, Controller. General of Prisons, and a clock was presented by Mr A- Longmore on behalf of the Wellington Justices’ Association. Mr Down’s successor is Mr W E Stewart, at. present Chief Warder of the Wellington Prison.
