BOROUGH BORROWING QUESTION.

Labourism and Communism have both • the sam e objective—Socialism; but Labourism and Capitalism have opposite objectives. Capitalism is recognised as the enemy of both. Yet Lab.

ourism excludes the Communist and welcomes the Capitalits. The reason of. this paradox is that Capitalism anc Labourism employ the same metho —- constitutionalism. So, by virtue ot having the same method, the two enemies can become friends— -working by the same method in opposite directions, whereas Labourism and Communism are. enemies—working by different methods in the same direction. I commend this engaging paradox to every Labourite who is not “afraid. Communism, realising that it has a common objective with Labour, has asked to be allowed to join forces with constitutional Socialism against common enemy. Labour bars the front door to the Communist, while through the back door comes the Capitalist—to undermine the Labour movement in New Zealand as cleverly and as subtly as he undermined it in Merrie England, where MacDonald, Snowden and Thomas bear witness to the fact.—I am, etc., HELEN FURY.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—I understand that the ratepayers will have a vote shortly lor or against a larger sum of money being raised for buying land and a new town hall and civic square. It is ridiculous to talk about such a proposition while .there i's so much that wants doing. The roads are a disgrace to the council, but, above all, we want proper drainage, and sewerage systems. Our local Health Inspector wants a certain few to put drains on their properties in Blaketown, while others get away without it. Anyone who votes for the loans for the proposals re buying land, the town hall, or a civic square should immediately see a doctor. We want sewerage and dramage first! I am, etc., “DRAINPIPE JOE.’’
