'.rhe Englishmen began to-day a twoday match against a Victorian country sid'e on a* perfect wicket, with beautiful ground surroundings. They batted freely, scoring 344 runs in 246 minutes, batting twelve men. A feature was a total of 104 in 158 minutes by Fishlock in his first innings since 'he broke his hand' at Adelaide before the fourth Test there. Hammond made a most artistic 53 in 60 minutes. Voce and Allen made a last-wicket stand 1 of 80 in 40 minutes, Voce scoring 53 unfinished in 50 minutes. Each scored a sixer, and each was in good form. Fishlock’s form indicated it is likelv he would have been troublesome In the Tests if uninjured. Scores: — England (first innings)—344; isliloek 104; Hammond! 53 • Voce, not out 53; Allen 33; Worthington 26; Copson 19.’ In the bowling, Kneebone took 4 for 63; Adams 3 for 74 ; and McDonald 2 for 91. . The Country team, in the nr. r innings, lost 2 for 29—Davidson, not out 21. Stumps were then drawn.
