BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Mr George Anderson, senr., Brodie Street, after many years’ residence in Blackball, lias left for Auckland, where he will in future reside. AH will join in wishing “Geordie’ the very best of luck in his. new abode. Last week-end about a dozen of the men employed on constructional woik on .fhe Blaekball-Brunner road were put off. This leaves about the same number still on the road, to -complete the job. It is understood that most of the men put off have been placed on the Alexander Road job, and some eight left here on Monday morning to start work there.

The sudden death of the engineer in charge of the Government gold subsidy scheme, the late Mr S. W. S. Strong, came as a shock to all the men employed on the subsidy in the district, to all of whom he was well known. In the early stages of the scheme, the late Mr Strong spent a lot of time in this area, and came into personal touch w’ith all the men here. On all sides, one hears* expressions of deep regret at his untimely passing, and the sympathy of all who knew him will go out to his widow and family and his parents in their sad bereavement. Messrs J. Aynsley and R. Clark, the local supervisors under the scheme, attended his funeral in Greymouth on Sunday last. It has now been ascertained that Mr J. M. Park, South Belt, who was removed to the Grey Hospital on Sunday last, is a sufferer from acute lumbago. His many friends will wish him a speedy and complete cure from this, distressing disease. Mr Tommie Naylor, who was a patient at the Grey Hospital, has returned to his home. Mrs V. Long, of Middleton, Christchurch, who has been visiting her relatives, Mrs Mountford and Mrs Kerr, has left on return to her home. The picture, “Show Boat,” which was shown here in the Miners*’ Hall, on Sunday night, drew a record crowd.

Blackball public school resumed on Monday after the extended holiday, caused through the restrictions enforced by the Public Health Department to check the spread of infantile paralysis. A full muster is reported. Some scholars have left school owing to having passed through the classes. To fill the gaps thus made in the ranks quite a number of new entrants have put in an appearance. The teaching staff includes two new teachers. Messrs McKenzie and McKeown, both from Christchurch. It is to be sincerely hoped that no further trouble will arise to interrupt the even flow’ of events, as quite a lot leeway falls to be made up.

The following scholars, who have been spending the vacation with thei'r parents in this district, have returned to their studies: Miss May Williams (Christchursh Training College), Miss Anastacia O’Donnell (Sacred Heart College, Christchurch), Miss Joy Hutson " (Nelson Girls’ College), Masters, lan and Peter Fallon (St Kevin’s, Oamaru), Master Jim Barry (St Bede’s, Christchurch).
