W'h'on asked: to-day to explain fhe mystery of H.M.S. “Leith’s” cruise in the Pacific, the Minister for Defence, Hon. F. Joncs„ s milingly admitted that, he knew something about the cruise but the only explanation he would make was the ship 'was not under the control of the New Zealand. Naval Board and -was therefore not a-ttaened to the New Zealand station. The move, meats of the “Leith” were directed by the British Admiralty. What, took place between the Admiralty and the Commander of the “Leith” does not cione,ern the New Zealand Government. During shunting (operations at Seacliff. at 7.10 o’clock this morning. Row. land Neilson Familton, 24, relieving tai I wav clerk, was killeid: when a wagon ran over him. After applying the brakes on the itirucks, he jumped di■rectlv in front of five wagons, on another set of rails, and wa» run down, not realising that shunting operations were in progress there. Deceased was a native of Camara, rep resenting North Otago in Rugby. He, was also a good swimmer, participating in a gallant rescue at Campbell’s Bay. some time ago.
