Mr H. McLachlan returned yesterday, from Christchurch. Mr F. McDonald, Westport, returned yesterday from Wellington. Mr J. Mclntosh arrived yesterday from Wellington. Mi - P. O’Farrell returned yesterday from Wellington. Mr W. E. Reynolds returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mrs J. W; Sunbye returned yesterday from Invercargill. Miss R. Connolly arrived yesterday from Christchurch. Mr D. Jensen was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Mrs L. Melrose arrived yesterday from Wellington. Dr. J. F. C. Moore returned yesterday from Wellington. Constable Lindsay Studholm, who has been appointed to Kumara, arrived' yesterday .from Christchurch. Miss Sara Dickson, of Hawera, is visiting Hokitika, and is the guest of Mrs M. Moore, Weld Street. A Tokio cablegram stated that M. Satoh, Japanese Ambassador to France has been appointed Foreign Mimstei. Mr Harold Knight. A.R.A., has been appointed a Royal Academician, stated a London cablegram. Constable G. J. Taylor arrived yesterday from Christchurch alnd proceeded to Westport where he commenees to-day.

Mr J. Pearson has been appointed to the temporary position of Collector of outstanding revenue by the Greymouth Borough Council.

Or. F. F. Boustridge, who _ leaves next week on an extended visit to England/, was last evening granted six months’ leave of absence by the Greymouth. Borough Council.

Mr W. Lee, of Sussex, England, arrived yesterday from Calcutta to spena a holiday with his sister, Mrs .E. Hooper, ‘Coal Creek, prior to leaving for London.

A vote of condolence with the relatives of the- late Colonel G. F. CCampbell, AuditW-General, was passed at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council.

Mr H. F. Nicoll, president of the New Zealand Trotting , Association and a prominent Ashburton farmer, was married in Christchurch on Wednesday, to Mrs Earle Riddiford, of Masterton.

A Bombay cable states that a New Zealander, Colonel Frere, a D'etired Indian Army officer, was found shot dead in hospital at Poona, after a month's illness. A pistol was lying near the body.

Mr A. F. Waters, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, has received notice of his appointment to the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth. Mr P. R. Wilkinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Blenheim,, has been appointed to the Nelson office.

Owing to ill-health Mr A. B. Lane has resigned from the position of manager of the United Press Association. Mr Lane was appointed manager in 1930 Prior to that he was news-editor ,of the Christchurch “Tinies” ana “Star,” and has held executive positions on leading newspapers in the South Island,

A Melbourne cable records the death of Doctor John Anderson Gilruth, Chief of the Division of Animal Health of the Commonwealth Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was 66 years of age. Dr. Gilruth was formerly in the New Zealand defence Department. Later he became Administrator of the Northern Territory of Australia.
