Stakes to Caesar (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received March 4, 8.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 4. The weather was line and there was a large attendance at to-day’s V.R.C. races. Soloist, which had every chance in the hurdles, was beaten for third place in the laqt stride, and will find it difficult to- win here, as to-day’s field was weak.

Prince Quex was certainly beaten in the Elms Handicap. He was last at the straight entrance, but finished brilliantly to get third. Caesar outclassed his opponents in the Ascotvale Stakes. He has now had two wins and two seconds in four starts. He races in the same interest as Fidelity, the winner of the race last year. Demotic enhanced his Cup prospects by a brilliant finish in the River Handicap, in which El Senorita led all the way. Gay Blonde ran a fair race, but was troubled by the weight. .Tilt had a comfortable win in the Hopeful Stakes. Elmeynelle and Princess Quex were never dangerous. Quasimodo finished fast to set a Flemington record, and equal the Australasian record in the First Division of the Welter.

’Evening Mist had a comfortable win in the Welter Second Division, Country Party had every show. Treasuie Trove was never dangerous. Results are as follows: — Autumn Hurdles. —Raskassa 9.8 (F. Dummett) 1; Grey Lash 10.13 (V. Cutler) 2; King Colossus 9.6 (J. McMahon) 3. Eight starters. Opinion was left at the post. Asolando fell. Time 4.5.

Elms Handicap.—Budapest 7.7 (E. Preston) 1; Mitsui 8.4 (W. Elliott) 2; Prince Quex 9.1 (J. O’Brien) 3. Thirteen started. Won by a neck; half a head. Valpan was fourth. Time 1.37.

Ascotvale Stakes. —Caesar 8.5 (D. Munro) 1; Ajax (M. McCarten) 2; Hua 9.1 (F. Demp''ey) 3. Nine starters. Won by two lengths; half a neck. Nightguard was fourth. Time 1.11-}.

He was Chairman of tho Victoria Amateur Turf Club, and bred and owned good horses, including Manfred (one of the fastest horses Australia has known, and winner of the Victoria Racing Club’s and Australian Jockey Club’s Derbies); also Whittier (win. ner of the Victoria Racing Club Derby); C’asenta, and’ Ninbela (win. ner of the Oaks).
