HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, December 18. Owing to the infantile paralysis danger the junior library will be closed from to-day until further notice. The Gael leaves "Wellington on. Saturday at midday for Hokitika direct. She goes for an excursion to the. southern sounds on Boxing Day evening. A wrestling feature on Cass Square at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon will be an interesting diversion. A Greymouth team is coming to give the hospital carnival a send off. There will be three bouts by .six. wrestlers, and Mr P C. Peters will be referee. Mr and Mrs R. Wild returned this morning from Christchurch. The Canterbury Education . Board yesterday approved the re-appointment of Mr W. H. Shannon as the board’s representative on the Hokitika High School Committee. Mrs Henshilwood and daugthers arrived last evening on a vipit to Hokiat Keller’s Hotel include: Mr and Mrs J. A. Hey (Dunedin), Mr 'and Mrs Malthus (Christchurch), Miss L. Sickenburger (Chicago), Mr Stanford Botley (Liverpool, England), Mr C Hall (Melbourne), Mrs E. M. Grace (Auckland), Prof. J. A. Campbell (Christchurch), Mr T. Donncllan (Greymouth). Mr J. G. L: Hewitt dealt with the following cases to-day at the Magistrate’s Court: Eric Broadbent on a charge of driving a motor vehicle and failing to produce his license was ordered to pay costs 10s 6d and a similar fee for driving without a license. Tangihaere Webb, on a charge of damaging the property of the Defence De partment, was ordered to pay the value of a uniform £1 16s Bd, am costs 22s 6d. On a charge of neglect to return equipment, he was oideied to nay 11s 7d and costs 15s. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: Hannah M. Hall v V. Rasmussen 20s and costs 10s; same v. Ivan S. Rasmussen, 45s and costs 235; Daisy Chinn.v. George Ringrose £5 and costs 23s 6d. The Kanieri Tennis Club met on Thursday evening. Miss Learmont who presided, referred to the bereavement of some of the club’s leading, players and committee, and a motion of sympathy was recorded. It was decided to withdraw the team from the “C” grade competition, owing to shortage of lady players. The matter of number of new balls to be used at the competition games was referred to the sub-association for a ruling. Transport to Kokatahi was left to the team captain, Mr A. McGlashen and M. Woolhouse to arrange. . Miss D. Newman was appointed acting secretary. At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board at Christchurch yesterday, appointments. confirmed included: Mr C. 11. Minifie transferred to Kumara Junction. Resignations accepted included Mr E. W. Comes, sole teacher, Okarito, Miss Kath Kennedy, sole teacher at Aritika. A special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening to meet the Engineer and deal with tenders for pipes. There were present the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Councillors Duff, Heinz, Thompson, Michel, Park and Parry. Apologies were made for Crs. King, Teichelmann and Elcock. The Engineer, Professor Campbell of Christchurch, was present to ’ advise the Council and a general discussion took place in committee. At the conclusion it was reported the tender of John Burns and Co. had been accepted for the supply of 39,200 feet of 4in., and 9100 feet of Gin. asbestos cement water pipes, delivered at Hokitika. for £5049. The tender of Stewart and Lloyd for the supply of 13,800 feet of weldless steel, stun-lined and sheathed Bin water mains, was accepted at. £5117, plus sales tax. The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for the pumping plant. The question of excavation and laying of the pipes will be discussed by the Council and the Engineer at a later date. It is expected that the pipes, which are to come from England, will arrive in about three months’ time.

The quarterly meeting of the Koka-tahi-Koiterangi Farmers’ Union will be held on Monday.

At the Warden’s Court the following applications were successful- J. H. Hannah, license for dam, Coal Creek. Kanieri S.D.; L. H. Finch extended extended beach claim, Waimea S.D.; South Westland Rimu Timber Coy. increased supply of water for race at Okarito; Alice Nixon, extended sea beach claim, Bruce .Bay S.D.; Thomas Walsh, extended sea beach claim, Gillespie’s S.D. —-All recommended. Alex ,T. Matheson, surrender sea beach claim. —Accepted. Wm. A. Buchanan and Martha I. Buchanan, surrender of special sea beach claims.—Accepted. N.Z. Prospecting Mining Ltd., ordinary prospecting license, Okarito S.D. —-Accepted. The December meeting of the Rimu and Woodstock Women’s Institute took place last evening at the residence of Mrs J. Kelly, Rimu. It was decided that parents take home the children’s Xmas toys and give the children a picnic later on, when the Health Department allows. Miss D. Hughes was first in the competition for the year’s work, the runners-up being Mrs T. Boyd and Mrs T. Wells. Other prize winners for the evening were Mrs D...’Wells 1, Mrs J. Kelly 2 in the names competition, and' Mrs W. O’Connor l,.Mrs J. O’Connor 2, in the word building. Xmas cheers were exchanged also good wishes to the children in Dunedin who are ill with infantile paralysis, and to their anxious parents. A dainty supper, served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. Kelly, J. Kennan, J. O’Connor brought a very delightful evening to a close.
