BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. S. Peggie, Postmaster of Blackball, was removed to the Grey Hospital early in the week, suffering from appendicitis. His condition, after being operated on, is reported to be entirely satisfactory. Mr. J. Hargreaves of the Greymouth Post Office, is acting Postmaster in Blackball at present. Air. W. Pendlebury, Clifford Street, left for Christchurch last Monday morning. He has secured a position there, through the agency of the Greymouth Employment Bureau. Mr. AY. Ritchie, Clifford Street, who has been visiting Christchurch during the week, has returned home. Mr. Richard Clark, senr., Afoonlig'it Road, who has been spending a b“liday in Christchurch, returned last week-end.

Mrs. Carson, Station Cottages, Blackball, has left on a holiday visit to Napier. Mr. W. Kirk has returned to his home, after being an inmate of the Grey Hospital, for a considerable period. He is much improved in health.

Mr. A. McLagan, Miners' National Secretary, addressed a meeting of the Blackball District Miners’ Union at the Miners’ Hall last Sunday forenoon and laid before them the points discussed when their local representatives in company with himself, had met the local company representatives for the purpose of drawing up a working agreement. to cover working conditions m the Blackball Mine and the Blackball Creek Aline. It is understood lhat the proposed agreement, follows along the lines of the West Coast agreement (with some slight modifications to suit local conditions) and while it has not yet been finally accepted by the companies concerned, there is every chance of its being so, at an early date. Quite a number of men have been placed on the Brunner-Blackball road and three Blackball men are, at the moment, busily engaged erecting camps along fhe flat beyond Hahn’s mill, towards Rough River. When these eamps are completed more men will be drafted on to the job of completing the Rough River road to Ikamatua. Both jobs are under the charge of Air. Dawber, assistant PAY. Engineer, Greymouth, whose Department in conjunction with the Employment Bureau, Greyniouth, is placing the men. The monthly meeting of the Blackball Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Minors’ Hall on Sunday last. Mr. J. Boag (chairman) presided over a fair attendance. There was plenty of correspondence, both inward and outward, which was keenly discussed. Anzac postage stamps are now available and can be bought from the branch secretary, Air. J. Williamson or from the local postmaster. Members in arrears are requested to pay their subscriptions to the secretary bv June 30.

The monthly meeting of the Blackball W.I. was held in the Druids’ Hall on June 3. Airs. Hutchinson presided over a good attendance. It was decided to send a delegate to lhe conference in Dunedin. A competition in word building was won by Airs. Chilton. The roll call, “Uses of Epsom Salts” brought some very useful hints. The competition for the evening was a plate of pikelets, Airs. James being first. Airs. Sneddon second and Airs. Rarity third. Supper was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Sneddon. Henderson and Alason.

Aiiss Irene Bailev, eldest daughter of Air. and Airs. H. Bailey, Clifford Street, is at present an inmate of the Grey Hospital. Her condition, it is understood, is showing a satisfactory improvement. Air. Richard Clarke, yesterday entered the Grey Hospital for treatment.
