WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) A Dual Charge: WESTPORT, May 9. Charged with drunkenness and with easting offensive matter on the footpath a fireman appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. G. Aitken J.P., and was fined £2 10s on the latter charge. Constable IL Allen conducted the prosecution. Accused was arrested in Palmerston Street by Constable George. Dr. Nicol Farewelled:

Dr. and Mrs. Nicol, who are leaving for Wellington where the former ■will take up duties la the Education Department were met yesterday by the teaching staff, Board of Managers and students of the Technical School and entertained al a farewell function. Mr. .1. Harkness who presided, expressed regret at the departure of Dr. Nicol, congratulated him on his promotion and confidently believed that he would attain the yet higher positions for which his ability, energy and perseverance so fitted him. Mr. Metson, Principal of the School, also paid a warm tribute to Dr. Nicol. Much of the success attained by students, who attended or passed through the school, was due to the good work of Dr. Nicol. Mr. Metson also paid a warm tribute to Mrs. Nicol for the good services she had rendered to the school at every function held there. Mr. .1. Watson also spoke. Mr. Alan Broad on behalf of the boy students and Miss Betty Rogers on behalf of the girls, made presentations to Dr. ami Airs. Nicol. The students rose and sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.’’ Dr. Nicol in the course of his reply said that he felt that he was not deserving of all the good things said about him. Any kindness he had done was much more than outdone by the good services all had rendered to him.' He trusted that the pupils would aim, both in the school and out of it, to bring credit to the institution, so that not only they, but others should feel proud in having been associated with it. Dr. Nicol concluded by thanking the Board, teachers ttnd students for the very pleasant time given to him during his association with the school. Members of the Board and teachers were the guests of the Principal at afternoon tea. Acclimatisation Society:

Air. G. Martin was in the chair at lhe annual meeting ol the Buller Acclimatisation Society. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. Geo. Martin; vice-president, Mr. \V Hart; Councillors, Messrs. Martin, Hart, Wood, Connelly, Cunningham, Rasmussen, Murray, Struthers, Ferguson, Menzies, Scully and Parry.

Caledonian Ingleside: There was a large attendance at the monthly Ingleside held by Buller Caledonians last evening. Mr. J. McLeod was unanimously elected to the position of chief, vacated by Air. Shanks. Di. Nicol gave a lecture on Thomas Carlyle giving a splendid survey of the writer’s life ami works. Chief McLeod took the opportunity of expressing the Society’s admiration and goodwill to Dr.' and Mrs. Nicol by presenting them with a beautiful clock. Dr. Nicol heartilv thanked the Society and stat•ed that he had always been pleased to assist the Society in its efforts to maintain and uphold the traditions of Scotland and he wished the Society every success in the future. The remainder of the evening was given to a concert programme ami a dance, the music for which was provided by Airs. Curtis’ orchestra.

Card Tournament: Despite a very cold snap in the weather, there was a good attendance at the Labour rooms last evening for the weekly card tournament. The ladies’ committee provided a dainty supper and with the rooms well heated the comfort of patrons was well catered for. The successful players were Mesdames Gray, Barry Fox ami Anderson.

Rifle Shooting: The Westport Rifle Club held the second small bore competition last cvenino-. The results were as follows: Score Hep. Total

Shipping: The Canopus and Te Aroha sailed yesterday. , The tramp steamer Silvus is loading 900 tons of bunkers and sails this evening for Wellington.
