There was a good .selection, composed largely of New Zealand crossbreds, which were well cleared under the influence of. keen Home competition. Current rates were maintained. Australian greasy meriuos were heavily withdrawn. owing to the firm limits. New Zealand scoured merinos, Floekhill, toil price 24d, average 22;jd, SYDNEY, May 7.

At to-day’s wool sales 9037 bales were offered and 8067 were sold, also 1706 privately. The market continued very firm at late rates. The average price of wool was £l4 15s lid per bale and 11.2 d per lb. The low average is due to a large proportion of erutchings being offered. CANBERRA, May S. The Federal Government has decided to impose a sales tax of not more than one shilling per bale on wool, to provide a research and publicity fund. The chief purpose of the fund will be to combat the menace in overseas markets of artificial wool and wool substitutes. Making the announcement, Mr. Lyons said that for a beginning the inaximiim of a shilling may not he

collected. It might possibly be as low as sixpence. The Government proposes to collect a levy from growers, arid pay it over to accredited representatives of the industry. A Wbol Research and Publicity Committee will be set up and will work in. association with similar New Zealand, South African and United Kingdom organisations.
