The fields will not be tinweildly. The principal event, the Pre-aiden-t’s Handicap comprises a li>’ld of eleven well-performed pacers, all capable of doing better than the 4min 32sec assessment of those on the limit. Agile and Bingen Balm have been out of the Tmelight of late, but on the same mark tire De Soto and Bullefit'ld two resolute pacers. Ihe formei is possibly as good as his record suggests, and in this ease he may be in at the finish. He has mile and two mile records that establish his tight to be regarded as a versatile racehorse. Battlefield is by Man o Mar and can be regarded as a stayer when handled by an expert, and Grace Ml Elwvn. who is on 12 yards behind, must be considered in the- company of most generous racehorses. Eew have a better ' record for consistency ami hard racing. Grand Mogul was the prime fancy for two mile- events til Eor’bury Park, but weather and track conditions prevented him from showing his accustomed speed. -In the ease of Grand Mogul, Forbury Park running can have little bearing oil his prospects. LittQ- Nelson has shown o-reat speed and unreliability in his races and will need to have everything in his favour with good-class horses opposed to him. Pernbrook Lass, who has not raced for some time, may provide a surprise. Taxpayer, the back-marker, is probably better placed at the back of the field than anywhere also and with his brilliant burst of speed he may prove troublesome at the end of the race. The President’s Handicap provides a problem for spesulators. but the favourites may be Grand Mogul, De Soto, and Grace- MeElwyn. with Taxpayer a possibility. The Forbury system of betting (first and second, and place) will operate. An enthusiastic meeting of representatives of the town and d’strict presided over by Mr. W. 11. Gaisford. decided to form a new racing club, to be known as the Daniievirke Jockey Club, provided 500 members were obtained. It is hoped to revive racing in Daniievirke. in the near future. About 100 members joined at the meet ing.

Rae.’ng at present is being conducted by ‘.ho Dannevirke Racing C'lub away from home, under agreements with neighbouring clubs, but this is not very popular with many, hence the move to form a new club. LONDON. Mtiv 6. The Chester Cup run at Chester, resulted:— Chosen 1 Gutscard . . - Jcsniand Done H Thirteen started. Won by a ijeek. with four lengths between second and third. Racins Notes Work ng a Commission: An interesting story comes from Melbourne as to how some commissioners operate in the ring. One o( tin

leading men was requested to back a horse for 200sovs, and he added another 1000 sovs on his own account. Swamping the market in such a man nor suggests that direct operation t< belli r 1.1 m giving a lead to plungerwho are sure to create trouble sooner or later. Contact: Contact, an entrant in the Grein Northern Hurdle Race, is trained b v W. D. Young, at Hastings . nd is a five-year-old geld.ng by Cockpit from Tractrix. At th L . recent Hawke’s Bay meeting he won the Karainu Hurdle Race by six lengths in fast time, and on Buster Monday he beat a useful field in the Waip.ukurau Cup, run ovr a mile and a-quarter. Reports from Hastings credit Contact with being a hurdler of considerable promise, and cne that looks certain to go on to betti r deeds. In Great Heart: Although Gay Rose’s form this autumn has been patchy she s in great heart at present and should not be d.scarded lightly in future engage meats. Has Resumed: Caliente, the Mitchelson Cup winner. has resumed work again, and is looking in first-class order to start another preparation under R- S. Bagby at Ellerslie. A Good Sort: Versant is a good sort when right, and he is now getting into racing condition. A proved galloper, who has only to train on soundly, he should win races this winter. A Good Jumper: That good jumper. Travelling Agent, is buck again, and if all goes well with h.m he should do a, few good turns for J. F. Tutchen. Freshened Up: Enge has had a short let-up from serious racing and he has freshened up n’cely. He is quite capable of going in heavy ground am] being a genuine sort of customer he should add further tii his already good record this season. Gay Defence: Gay Defence canu. hack to form with a rush before Easter, but then went oil colour again. He has not been bustled lately and if he can be brought back to his previous condition his winter prespei-ts look very bright. Good Qualifictaions: Wee Hat has two good points in her favour in jumping races. .She is a good foiicer antd has stamina. Her prospects at this stage for some of th<‘ mure important events ahead look good, as she is in great older. One to Watch: Golden England’s third over the hurdles at Avondale. point to his being successful over country this season. He goes better over the big jumps than hurdles. Improved: Royal Limond is mak'ng another North Island campaign. He will work his way to Auckland to tackle one again the Great Northern Steeple chase, which he won last year. lb :s considered a better hors ( . now than he was 12 months ago. Hohona: Hohona, ran a good second to Cheval de Voice at Pukekohe. but did not show the same form again until the second day at Avondale. ’[’he easing of the track may have been responsibh for this, so she should be worth keeping in mind for forthcoming meetings. Mainland: Mainland has only had three starts and Ilin result Ims been the same on each occasion, second, '‘she s bred to act in hcavv going, so her maiden success is near at hand. Well BrcH: Cyrillian 's an interesting entrant at Amberlca. Bv Iliad from Cymene she is a half-sister to the Derby winner. Cylinder. CyrTlian is owned by Air. H. D'. Grienwood, and is trained by F. D. Jones at Riccarton. Trotting Notes Stirling Lady: One of the most pleasing performances seen on Forbury for a long time went to the credit of Stirl'ng Lady whin she won the Ritchie Memorial Handicap from 36 yards. She had thirteen horses to pass and was forced Io go wide in the early stages to gain a position. Ilowevi'r, she. ran through

smartly, and when she was asked a question she responded like a champion '.n ‘.he making. A br girt future can be predicted for her. and it should not b-i long before she graces Canterbury courses. Rey Spec: Rev Spec's form at Forbury Park consisted of two starts and two stops on the mark. Supertax: Supertax made two bold bids for .1 'win at Forbury Park, but on each dav just gut touched off at the f.nicli. San Michele: Tlii> game performer San Michele was got by Rev de Oro from Miss Florrie C-. ly W.ndwood from 0.1. C., bv Young Irvington—Flora, by Tribune. a thoroughbred son of Tradiicer. Queen Author: Queen Author’s skip in the Farewell Handicap when racing to th > tar turn cost hi'f a good winning chance as she made up lost ground to finish a close fourth. A Flash of Speed: Graham Direct showed the best flash of speed in the Farewell Handicap at Dunedin that was seen at the meeting. At the half mile r .ost he was standing up the senders fully 48 yards and was with them at the end of four furlongs whin he broke. Pr nee Harvester: Prince Harvester is set to give away 48 yards start in the Waikaura Hand.cap at Oamaru, and though he may improve on his form at Forbury Park, where track eond tions did not suit him. he may have difhculty in beating Lung Island, Royal Romance, and Renegade. The Improvers; The Stewards’ Handicap at Oamaru 10-day will provide a test between horses that have .just graduated from the maiden class and those* that have won in rather impressive st vie include Dotrbt from O. E. Hooper’s stable. Myrna l.ov fl’. P. Brosnan), and Precious Metal (M. O. MeTigue). who fought out a dingdong finish on the second day at Forbury Park, Moana Tania, (R. Motz), who has not yet reproduced his two-year-old form. Lucky Jack (R. B. Berry), one of the most promising three-year-olds of the year. On Parade (a w'nner at Cheviot and capable of still better things), and Red Flush (Mr. R,. Edwards), whose winning turn is overdue. A Sprintirr: Dandy Loeanda. who is engaged at the Marlborough meetings, has not shown any ability excepting .□ sprint events, but the class at this week’s meeting should not be beyond him. He is natu-ally a quick beginner and this will help’ him to win races on the Blenhc’m course. Hori IBingen: llorl B’ngen was backed ami beaten in the Bruntwood Handicap at Camhridg: but it was th > distance that heat him. Beginn'iig in his best style Hori Bingen quickl" hit th** iron* and made a gallant effort to win all the way, but he was not capable of seeing out the mle ami a-half. It was intended to start him in the shorter Introductory Handicap, but through his lute arrival at the course he litid .to forgo his engagement.
